Background: Patients with chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU) can have comorbid inducible urticaria (CIndU). How comorbid CIndU affects patients and their CSU is largely unclear.
Objective: To compare patients with CSU with and without comorbid CIndUs for differences in demographic features, clinical characteristics, and laboratory markers.

Chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU) is a debilitating mast cell-driven disease characterized by recurrent wheals and/or angioedema. Substantial progress has been made in dissecting the 2 main autoimmune mechanisms that drive the pathogenesis of CSU. Type I autoimmune (autoallergic) CSU is associated with IgE antibodies against autoantigens, for example, thyroid peroxidase and IL-24.

This update on chronic urticaria (CU) focuses on the prevalence and pathogenesis of chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU), the expanding spectrum of patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) for assessing CU disease activity, impact, and control, as well as future treatment options for CU. This update is needed, as several recently reported findings have led to significant advances in these areas. Some of these key discoveries were first presented at past meetings of the Collegium Internationale Allergologicum (CIA).

Background: Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are characterized by deficits in social communication and language and the presence of repetitive behaviors that affect as many as 1 in 50 US children. Perinatal stress and environmental factors appear to play a significant role in increasing the risk for ASDs. There is no definitive pathogenesis, which therefore significantly hinders the development of a cure.

Availability of a line of rabbits deficient in the sixth complement component (C6-D) made it possible to evaluate the role of the terminal complement complex (TCC) in the development of experimental autoimmune thyroiditis (EAT) of the rabbit. Immunization with saline extract of homologous thyroid, known to be composed predominantly of thyroglobulin, led in normocomplementemic (NC) rabbits to severe thyroiditis, with cellular infiltrates occupying 50-95% of the thyroid, and to minimal or moderate thyroiditis, with 1-35% of thyroids infiltrated in C6-D rabbits. Cellular infiltrates consisted predominantly of mononuclear cells with appreciable numbers of granulocytes.
