The occurrence of heterotopic ossification after total hip arthroplasty may be prevented by radiation or medical therapy. The authors report the results obtained in 96 cases treated by cobalt therapy: the occurrence of high grade ossification (Brooker III and IV) is equal to 1% in cases treated, as compared to 9% in cases not treated. Male patients of advanced age and who are characterized by primary arthrosis are more at risk for ossification.

Background: The presence of multiple comorbid pathologic features in late-onset dementia has been well documented across cohort studies that incorporate autopsy evaluation. It is likely that such mixed pathology potentially confounds the results of interventional trials that are designed to target a solitary pathophysiologic mechanism in Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD).
Method: The UK ADRC autopsy database was screened for participants who had previously engaged in therapeutic interventional trials for Alzheimer's disease, vascular cognitive impairment, dementia, and/or ADRD prevention trials from 2005 to the present.
Background: The therapeutic management of dementia with Lewy bodies (LBD) is a challenge given the high sensitivity to drugs in this disease. This is particularly sensitive with regard to the management of parkinsonism. In particular, treatment of motor symptoms with levodopa or dopaminergic agonists poses a risk of worsening cognitive and behavioral symptoms.

We report a new NMR method for treating two-site chemical exchange involving half-integer quadrupolar nuclei in a solution. The new method was experimentally verified with extensive Na ( = 3/2), K ( = 3/2), and Rb ( = 3/2) NMR results from alkali metal ions (Na, K, and Rb) in a solution over a wide range of molecular tumbling conditions. In the fast-motion limit, all allowed single-quantum NMR transitions for a particular quadrupolar nucleus are degenerate giving rise to one Lorentzian signal.

Background: Emerging research suggests that complementary and supportive care programs, such as music therapy, show positive short-term impacts (e.g., purposeful engagement, positive emotions) on persons with dementia who live in care facilities.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFRationale: Prior work has shown a preference among most people with dementia and their families for comfort-focused care near the end-of-life. Nonetheless, intubation and mechanical ventilation are increasing over time without concurrent trends in improved survival, including among those with advanced dementia. A better understanding of prehospital decision-making about intubation for people with dementia will guide efforts to increase goal-concordant care at onset of critical illness.
