Developing efficient strategies for the deoxygenative functionalization of carbonyl compounds is crucial for enhancing the effective utilization of biomass and the upgrading of chemical feedstocks. In this study, we present an elegant cathodic reduction strategy that enables a tandem alkylation/dearomatization reaction between quinoline derivatives and aryl aldehydes/ketones in a one-pot process. Our approach can be executed via two distinct paths: the aluminum (Al)-facilitated spin-center shift (SCS) path and the Al-facilitated direct deoxygenation path.

Background And Objectives: Gingivitis and periodontitis are common periodontal diseases that can significantly harm overall oral health, affecting the teeth and their supporting tissues, along with the surrounding anatomical structures, and if left untreated, leading to the total destruction of the alveolar bone and the connective tissues, tooth loss, and other more serious systemic health issues. Numerous studies have shown that propolis can help reduce gum inflammation, inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria, and promote tissue regeneration, but with varying degrees of success reported. For this reason, this comprehensive systematic review aims at finding out the truth concerning the efficacy of propolis mouthwashes in treating gingivitis and periodontitis, as its main objective.

Super-strong hydrogel reinforced by an interconnected hollow microfiber network via regulating the water-cellulose-copolymer interplay.

Sci Bull (Beijing)

January 2025

Hubei Biomass-Resource Chemistry and Environmental Biotechnology Key Laboratory, Hubei Provincial Engineering Research Center of Emerging Functional Coating Materials, School of Resource and Environmental Sciences, Wuhan University, Wuhan 430079, China. Electronic address:

The discontinuous fiber reinforced hydrogels are easy to fail due to the fracture of the fiber matrix during load-bearing. Here, we propose a novel strategy based on the synergistic reinforcement of interconnected natural fiber networks at multiple scales to fabricate hydrogels with extraordinary mechanical properties. Specifically, the P(AA-AM)/Cel (P(AA-AM), poly(acrylic acid-acrylamide); Cel, cellulose) hydrogel is synthesized by copolymerizing AA and AM on a substrate of paper with an interconnected hollow cellulose microfiber network.

Analysis of the protective effect of hydrogen sulfide over time in ischemic rat skin flaps.

Ann Chir Plast Esthet

January 2025

Department of Plastic, Reconstructive, and Aesthetic Surgery, Faculty of Medicine, Çukurova University, Adana, Turkey.

Background: Hydrogen sulfide (HS) is a widely studied gasotransmitter, and its protective effect against ischemia-reperfusion damage has been explored in several studies. Therefore, a requirement exists for a comprehensive study about HS effects on ischemia-reperfusion damage in flap surgery. The aim of this study is to examine the effect of hydrogen sulfide by creating ischemia-reperfusion injury in the vascular-stemmed island flap prepared from the rat groin area.

Acid triggering highly-efficient release of reactive oxygen species to block mitochondrial-mediated homeostasis maintenance for accelerating cell death.

Electronic address:

A pivotal pathway of photodynamic therapy (PDT) is to prompt mitochondrial damage by reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, thus leading to cancer cell apoptosis. However, mitochondrial autophagy is induced during such a PDT process, which is a protective mechanism for cancer cell homeostasis, resulting in undermined therapeutic efficacy. Herein, we report a series of meticulously designed donor (D)-π-acceptor (A) photosensitizers (PSs), characterized by the strategic modulation of thiophene π-bridges, which exhibit unparalleled mitochondrial targeting proficiency.
