Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) is a rare, rapidly progressive, and incurable neurodegenerative disorder caused by prions. It is invariably fatal and classified under transmissible spongiform encephalopathies. This case report presents a 66-year-old Saudi female who was admitted to the neurology department due to a rapidly advancing cognitive decline.

Pt-based intermetallic alloy particles with a Pt skin layer have higher catalytic activity than solid-solution alloy particles and have attracted considerable attention for practical applications in polymer electrolyte fuel cells. However, the reason for the superior performance of intermetallic alloys is not yet fully understood. Because the catalytic reaction proceeds on the topmost surface of the particle, it is necessary to clarify the relationship between the periodic structure of the intermetallic alloy and the Pt atomic coordination on the surface.

Transmission electron microscopy, especially at cryogenic temperature, is largely used for studying biological macromolecular complexes. A main difficulty of TEM imaging of biological samples is the weak amplitude contrasts due to electron diffusion on light elements that compose biological organisms. Achieving high-resolution reconstructions implies therefore the acquisition of a huge number of TEM micrographs followed by a time-consuming image analysis.

Background: Carotid endarterectomy (CEA) is widely used to treat carotid artery stenosis (CAS). However, the effects of CEA on unilateral CAS-induced cognitive impairment and the underlying mechanism remain poorly understood.
Methods And Results: Thirteen patients diagnosed with unilateral severe CAS underwent pre- and post-CEA assessments, including fluoro-2-deoxy-d-glucose positron emission tomography/magnetic resonance imaging, cognitive assessments, and routine blood tests before and after CEA.
