The anti-rickettsial activity of azithromycin and clarithromycin was studied in Vero cells. The rate of rickettsial inhibition-growth caused by both macrolides was determined using rickettsial counts and ELISA. Both macrolides inhibited > 50% the growth of Rickettsia conorii and Rickettsia typhi at concentrations of 1.0 and 0.1 mg/L, respectively. The growth of Coxiella burnetii was inhibited to a rate of > or = 50% at the concentrations of 0.01 and 1.0 mg/L of azithromycin and clarithromycin, respectively.

Methionine aminopeptidase (MetAp) enzymes catalyze the post-translational removal of the initiator methionine residue in newly synthesized proteins, a process that is often essential in the maturation of proteins. Consequently, these enzymes serve as important targets for drug development. Rickettsia prowazekii (Rp) is an obligate coccobacillus and the causative agent of the louse-borne epidemic typhus and despite adequate treatment causes a latent infection.

An Ehrlichia ruminantium culture system was utilized for the anti-rickettsial evaluation of two ethnoveterinary plants, Elephantorrhiza elephantina and Aloe marlothii. Well-established E. ruminantium cultures were incubated with the plant leaf acetone extracts and compared to oxytetracycline and untreated controls.

The match between ticks and pediatricians in Italy is usually a seasonal event related to the spring and summer trips and to the increasing of outdoor activity that sun and warm weather allow, both for children and ticks. So cared parents reach emergencies asking for tick removal but more often after the tick has yet been removed by empirical manoeuvres and after the killing and the destruction of the "enemy". We have scheduled, in the years 2002-2003, the 167 children that reached our unit for a tick bite; they where 92 males (mean age four years) and 75 females (mean age five years).

The nematode parasites Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi, and B. timori cause a human disease known as lymphatic filariasis, which afflicts approximately 120 million people worldwide. These organisms are known to contain endosymbiotic bacteria (Wolbachia) that are related to rickettsiae.

Natural killer (NK) cell activity was significantly increased on days 2-6 of infection in the Rickettsia conorii-infected C3H/HeN mice and on day 2 in the Rickettsia typhi-infected C57BL/6 mice. Depletion of NK cell activity utilizing anti-NK1.1 monoclonal antibody enhanced the susceptibility of normally resistant C57BL/6 mice to infection with R.
