Several isolates of Gram-positive, acidophilic, moderately thermophilic, ferrous-iron- and mineral-sulphide-oxidizing bacteria were examined to establish unequivocally the characteristics of Sulfobacillus-like bacteria. Two species were evident: Sulfobacillus thermosulfidooxidans with 48-50 mol% G+C and Sulfobacillus acidophilus sp. nov. with 55-57 mol% G+C. Both species grew autotrophically and mixotrophically on ferrous iron, on elemental sulphur in the presence of yeast extract, and heterotrophically on yeast extract. Autotrophic growth on sulphur was consistently obtained only with S. acidophilus.

Phthalate diesters are important pollutants and act as endocrine disruptors. While certain bacterial esterases have been identified for phthalate diesters degradation to monoesters, their structural and mechanistic characteristics remain largely unexplored. Here, we highlight the potential of the thermostable and pH-tolerant EstS1 esterase from Sulfobacillus acidophilus DSM10332 to degrade high molecular weight bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) by combining biophysical and biochemical approaches along with high-resolution EstS1 crystal structures of the apo form and with bound substrates, products, and their analogs to elucidate its mechanism.

The copper industry utilizes significant amounts of sulfuric acid in its processes, generating sulfate as waste. While sulfate-reducing bacteria can remove sulfate, it produces hydrogen sulfide (HS) as a byproduct. The widespread -I riboswitch class exemplifies divergent riboswitch evolution. To analyze how natural selection has diversified its versatile RNA fold, we determined the X-ray crystal structure of the -I subtype-1 (Guanidine-I) riboswitch aptamer domain. Differing from the previously reported structures of orthologs from and , our structure reveals a chelated K ion adjacent to two Mg ions in the guanidine-binding pocket.
