Fungal infections (FIs) are widespread globally, affecting both immunocompromised and immunocompetent children, with varying clinical implications based on age and comorbidities. In immunocompromised children, particularly those with hematologic oncological conditions, FI leads to substantially longer hospital stays and increased in-hospital mortality, with reported rates ranging from 15% to 20%. Our study aims to analyze the epidemiological trends of fungal infections in the pediatric population within a specific region of Italy.

Pathogenic variants in , encoding dynamin-like protein-1 (DRP1), cause a lethal encephalopathy. DRP1 defective function results in altered mitochondrial networks, characterized by elongated/spaghetti-like, highly interconnected mitochondria. We validated in yeast the pathogenicity of a de novo variant identified by whole exome sequencing performed more than 10 years after the patient's death.

However, its high potency, low cost, and accessibility have also made it a significant drug of abuse, contributing to the global opioid epidemic. This review aims to provide an in-depth analysis of fentanyl's medical applications, pharmacokinetics, metabolism, and pharmacogenetics while examining its adverse effects and forensic implications.
