Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) account for a large proportion of healthcare-associated infections. CAUTIs, caused by colonization of the catheter surface by uropathogens, are challenging to treat, especially when compounded by antibiotic resistance. One prophylactic strategy that could reduce pathogen colonization is bacterial interference, whereby the catheter surface is coated with non-pathogenic bacteria.

The placement of root filling materials aims to prevent the occurrence of post-treatment apical periodontitis following completion of endodontic treatment. Materials should possess properties that will not permit bacterial invasion and infection, namely excellent sealing ability and/or antibacterial properties. In root-end filling procedures or repair of root perforations, the root filling materials are placed in a particularly challenging clinical environment, as they interface with a relatively large area with the periradicular tissues.

Neglected tropical viral diseases are a burden to social and economic welfare being responsible for higher pathogen-related mortality rates and chronic debilitating patient conditions. Climatic changes have widened up the infectibility ratio of such diseases, with autochthonous transmission in formerly temperate-to-cold environments. The slow-paced development of potential vaccines followed by the inexistence of antiviral drugs for such diseases considerably worsens the situation.

Liquid atomization is utilized across various industrial applications, including nanopowder production, spray drying, fuel combustion, coating applications, emulsion preparation, and in medical devices. The use of ultrasonic energy for atomization offers advantages in terms of environmental sustainability compared to other methods. Notably, ultrasonic atomization can achieve finer dispersion with a narrow droplet size distribution at relatively low energy consumption, which is crucial for certain technological applications.
