Two cases of thrombosis of the mesencephalic artery are described : the location of the occlusion and of the infarcted area in the upper mesencephalon is correlated to the clinical syndrome, in particular to the existence or the absence of an oculomotor paralysis. In addition 27 normal brains are examined by means of the translucidation and the radiographic techniques after filling of the arterial system with a colloidal barium sulphate solution. This study supports the subdivision of the upper mesencephalon into five vascular territories and justifies the denomination of mesencephalic artery, which supplies a transitional region between the diencephalon and the brainstem.

Brain cytotoxic edema is a neuroradiological sign secondary to variegate diseases ranging from migraine to fulminant Listeria rhombencephalitis. The tempestive identification of its underlying cause is vital for an effective treatment as any delay may be fatal. However, the lack of distinctive imaging biomarkers and the paucity of reports pose a significant challenge in its diagnosis and frequently lead to a misdiagnosis particularly with the more common acute ischemic stroke.

Aim: Cerebral ischemic stroke (IS) is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality globally. However, the mechanisms underlying IS injury remain poorly understood. Ring finger protein 2 (RNF2), the member of the polycomb family (PcG), has been implicated in diverse biological and pathological conditions.

Occlusion of the artery of Percheron (AOP) is a rare yet potentially disabling form of ischemic stroke resulting in infarction of the bilateral paramedian thalami and mesencephalon with variable and often atypical presentation. Given the various patterns of thalamic blood supply, recognizing the presence of AOP infarction is crucial for the diagnosis and management of ischemic strokes involving these regions. Here, we report a case of acute hemorrhagic infarction involving the bilateral thalami and the rostral mesencephalon caused by a cardioembolic occlusion of the AOP.

Bilateral dilated pupils are an ominous clinical sign of brainstem dysfunction, which uniformly leads to a bad prognosis for the patient. In some rare instances in adult patients, it could be reversible. We present a clinical case of an elderly stroke patient with bilateral dilated pupils with a surprisingly favorable clinical outcome.

The activation of autonomic and hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) systems occurs interdependently with behavioral adjustments under varying environmental demands. Nevertheless, laboratory rodent studies examining the neural bases of stress responses have generally attributed increments in these systems to be monolithic, regardless of whether an active or passive coping strategy is employed. Using the shock probe defensive burying test (SPDB) to measure stress-coping features naturalistically in male and female rats, we identify a neural pathway whereby activity changes may promote distinctive response patterns of hemodynamic and HPA indices typifying active and passive coping phenotypes.
