Introduction: Enamel translucency, essential for the aesthetic appeal of teeth, is primarily determined by its thickness, quality, and refractive index. Several factors, including age, genetics, diet, oral hygiene practices, fluoride exposure, and acidic challenges, can influence enamel translucency. Tobacco use, in particular, leads to significant alterations in enamel appearance by penetrating its micropores, causing yellowing and browning.

Mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) is a well-established technique that allows to determine the distribution of small molecules, such as lipids, metabolites, and drugs, as well as large molecules in tissue sections. Because of the tissue heterogeneity, resulting in different matrix effects, and to the fact that the measured compounds are not entirely "extracted" from the tissue during the measurement, the absolute quantitative aspect of MSI is limited. To combine compound quantification with spatial information on fresh frozen unstained tissue sections, laser (capture) microdissection has been used to isolate tissue sections for compound extraction and LC-MS/MS quantification.

Visual deprivation causes enhanced eye growth and the development of myopia, which is associated with a change in the arrangement of collagen fibers within the sclera. A second harmonic generation (SHG) microscope has been used to image the collagen fibers of unstained scleral punches from the posterior part of chicken eyes. We aimed to analyze the fibrous scleral tissue and quantify the changes in collagen organization in relation to the extent of induced deprivation myopia.

Recently, multimode fiber (MMF) has shown promise in enabling high-resolution in vivo endoscopy in biological research. Herein, we introduce a novel, to the best of our knowledge, phase imaging microscopy technique employing a single multimode fiber, showcasing remarkable capabilities in high-contrast imaging and quantitative shape reconstruction through frequency-domain modulation.

The diagnostic and prognostic role of the tumour stroma in BC remains to be defined.
