AI Article Synopsis

  • - Comets contain a lot of volatile materials, with about 80% being water molecules, and scientists are working to identify other volatile compounds present.
  • - The infrared spectrum of comet C/1996 B2 (Hyakutake) revealed the presence of acetylene (C2H2), estimated to be 0.3-0.9% relative to water, which is significant for understanding comet composition.
  • - The findings suggest that the volatiles in comet Hyakutake likely originated from ice-covered interstellar grains instead of materials modified during the formation of the Solar System.

Article Abstract

Comets are rich in volatile materials, of which roughly 80% (by number) are water molecules. Considerable progress is being made in identifying the other volatile species, the abundances of which should enable us to determine whether comets formed primarily from ice-covered interstellar grains, or from material that was chemically processed in the early solar nebula. Here we report the detection of acetylene (C2H2) in the infrared spectrum of comet C/1996 B2 (Hyakutake). The estimated abundance is 0.3-0.9%, relative to water, which is comparable to the predicted solid-phase abundance in cold interstellar clouds. This suggests that the volatiles in comet Hyakotake may have come from ice-covered interstellar grains, rather than material processed in the accretion disk out of which the Solar System formed.

Carbon Black Absorption Enhanced Fiber-Optic Photoacoustic Gas Sensing System with Ultrahigh Sensitivity.

A highly sensitive trace gas sensing system based on carbon black absorption enhanced photoacoustic (PA) spectroscopy (PAS) is reported. A carbon black sheet and a fiber-optic cantilever microphone (FOCM) are integrated to form a fiber-optic cantilever spectrophone (FOCS). The gas concentration is obtained by measuring the acoustic wave amplitude generated by the carbon black sheet, which absorbs the laser passing through the interest gas.

Protein S-palmitoylation is the process by which a palmitoyl fatty acid is attached to a cysteine residue of a protein via a thioester bond. A range of methodologies are available for the detection of protein S-palmitoylation. In this study, two methods for the S-palmitoylation of different proteins were compared after metabolic labeling of cells with 15-hexadecynoic acid (15-YNE) to ascertain their relative usefulness.

We present a new, to the best of our knowledge, approach for self-heterodyne optical frequency comb (OFC) spectroscopy in which a single Mach-Zehnder modulator is utilized to generate both an optical frequency comb and a frequency-shifted local oscillator. This method allows for coherent, time-domain averaging to be performed without the need for feedback mechanisms or software corrections. As an initial demonstration, we have measured acetylene rovibrational transition frequencies with coherently averaged comb spectra.

Targeting Ru(III) and Ru(I) η-alkyne species, 2,2'-(PrE)-substituted diphenylacetylenes (1-E, E=P, As) were employed for the preparation of [ECCE]-coordinated ruthenium complexes. The reactions between 1-E and cis-(MeCN)(COD)RuCl led to the required Ru(II) starting materials cis-[ECCE]RuCl(MeCN) (3-E). Upon oxidation of 3-E with PhICl, the Ru(III) target complexes [ECCE]RuCl (7-E) were detectable for E=P and E=As, but only the arsa-derivative 7-As was obtained in a pure form, namely via oxidation of cis-[AsCCAs]RuCl(THT) (THT=tetrahydrothiophene).

A novel balloon-type photoacoustic cell (BTPAC) is proposed to facilitate the detection limitations of acetylene (CH) gas achieving ppb level. Here, an ellipsoidal photoacoustic cavity is employed as the platform for gas-light interaction. By strategically directing the excitation source towards the focal point of the ellipsoidal cavity, ensuring its trajectory traverses the focal point upon each reflection from the interior walls.
