Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is a major global health concern as it is a leading cause of morbidity, mortality and economic burden to the health care systems. In Germany, more than 15,000 people die every year from CAP. Climate change is altering weather patterns, and it may influence the probability and severity of CAP.

Over the past century, drops production mechanisms from bubble bursting have been extensively studied. They include the centrifugal fragmentation of liquid ligaments from the bubble cap during film rupture, the flapping of the cap film, and the disintegration of Worthington jets after cavity collapse. We show here that a dominant fraction of previously identified as "surface bubble bursting" submicron drops are, in fact, generated underwater, in the abyss, inside the bubbles themselves before they have reached the surface.

Acute lung injury (ALI) represents a critical respiratory condition typified by rapid-onset lung inflammation, contributing to elevated morbidity and mortality rates. Central to ALI pathogenesis lies macrophage dysfunction, characterized by an overabundance of pro-inflammatory cytokines and a shift in metabolic activity towards glycolysis. This study emphasizes the crucial function of glucose metabolism in immune cell function under inflammatory conditions and identifies hexokinase 2 (HK2) as a key regulator of macrophage metabolism and inflammation.

() is a widely existing opportunistic pathogen and thus threatens people with low immunity, especially infants. To prevent the outbreak, a rapid and accurate on-site testing method is required. The current standard culture-based method is time-consuming (3-4 days), while the nucleic acid amplification (PCR)-based detection is mostly carried out in central laboratories.

Global emission reductions still must address winter fine particulate matter (PM) pollution in urban basins with enclosed terrains and frequent cold air pool (CAP) events when the temperatures within the basin are colder than above it. The effects of urban basin aerosol-boundary layer interactions on PM pollution during CAP events remain unclear. Intensive boundary layer observations in January 2021 and numerical models were used to investigate this issue in the semi-arid urban Lanzhou Basin of China.
