The effects of low lead exposure were investigated in 96 children (7-12 years old) living and studying within a 1 km radius of a lead smelter (exposed population) located in Torreón, Coahuila, México, and compared with 30 children living and studying 4.5 km from the same smelter (control population). Both populations had similar socio-economic conditions. The exposed population showed higher blood lead (PbB) and free erythrocyte protoporphyrin (FEP) concentrations (17.3 +/- 5.6 micrograms dl-1 and 53.9 +/- 46.1 micrograms dl-1, respectively) than controls (PbB, 5.4 +/- 3.1 micrograms dl-1 and FEP, 13.9 +/- 7.3 micrograms dl-1). PbB concentrations were inversely correlated to distance from the smelter (r2 = 0.494). However, in the exposed population, wind direction also had a significant effect on the PbB and urinary lead (PbU) concentrations. The exposed population was divided according to PbB into a high level lead group (PbB > 15 micrograms dl-1), which also showed high FEP concentrations and a low lead group (PbB < 15 micrograms dl-1). Clinically, the high lead group showed a greater incidence of general symptoms (colic, headache, paresthesia, myalgia and dizziness), impairment of some neuromuscular functions (neuromuscular conduction velocity and motor coordination) and a decrease of intelligence quotient (IQ), which was not related with sex or socio-economic status. These results are an evidence of morbidity in children with high PbB concentrations.

Blood lead levels (BLL) for 285 children, three to six years old, from seven basic schools located in known areas of anthropogenic pollution, and in urban and rural areas are reported. The samples were obtained by the finger-prick method and analyzed for lead by anodic stripping voltammetry. The majority of the children had blood lead levels below the now accepted limit of 10 micrograms dL-1 and there was no indication of cases that would represent medical emergencies.

We report a case of nesidioblastosis, which is characterized by hyperinsulinism due to a diffuse increase in the number of beta-cells in the pancreas and, consequently, severe hypoglycemia. The patient was a 79-day-old boy. He had been suffering from severe hypoglycemia despite aggressive treatment, including glucose loading and administration of glucocorticoid and diazoxide.

Objective: : The objective of the present review is to assess the impact of universal salt iodisation in Nigeria during the last five years, with reference to some of the sentinel sites studied previously during a 1995 multi-centre study.
Design, Setting And Subjects: : The method of goitre classification by palpation was employed using the new internationally accepted method in which the classification is simply graded as 0, 1 or 2. The multistage random sampling method was used and states and local government areas were already selected by virtue of their known status for iodine deficiency disorders (IDD).

In this study, 539 occupationally exposed subjects received in vivo bone lead measurements using 109Cd excited K X-ray fluorescence (109Cd K XRF). Of these subjects, 327 had previously been measured five years earlier. Measurements were made from both tibia and calcaneus samples, taken to reflect cortical and trabecular bone, respectively.
