Tics status.

Aust N Z J Psychiatry

School of Psychiatry, University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia.

Published: June 1996

Objectives: To describe two patients with tics status, propose a definition of this syndrome and draw attention to its clinical significance.

Method: Two patients suffering from Tourette's Syndrome who had developed episodes of continual motor tics that lasted from minutes to hours, were non-suppressible and intruded into normal functioning, were treated with an increase in the dose of haloperidol, in one case with the addition of clonazepam.

Results: The offset of the episodes was gradual and the tic disorder was worse after the episodes. One patient had further spontaneous episodes of tics status.

Conclusions: The recognition of tics status has implications for the management as well as our understanding of the pathobiology of tics and Tourette's Syndrome. The definition of tics status should be standardised.

Objective: Our study assessed child-serving health care providers' attitudes and knowledge related to identification and treatment of tic disorders including Tourette syndrome (TS), among children.

Methods: We analyzed cross-sectional data from the 2022 Fall DocStyles, a web-based survey of health care providers. The analytic sample included 1058 child-serving providers (403 family practitioners, 232 internists, 251 pediatricians, and 172 nurse practitioners or physician assistants).

Article Synopsis
  • This study explored how childhood sibling relationships affect cognitive functioning in late adulthood, using the linked lives concept from life course perspective.
  • Results showed that positive interactions among siblings during childhood lead to closer sibling connections in adulthood, which correlate with better cognitive performance later in life.
  • Conversely, adverse childhood experiences negatively impact these relationships and cognitive abilities, emphasizing the importance of maintaining strong sibling ties for cognitive health.

Background: While general self-efficacy is known to relate to achievement in many areas, it has rarely been evaluated in individuals with low vision. Here we explore the psychometric properties and targeting of the New General Self Efficacy Scale (NGSES) using Rasch analysis in data collected from older adult clinical trial participants with low vision.

Methods: Participants (n = 121) completed pre-intervention telephone questionnaires (i.

Article Synopsis
  • Tourette's syndrome is a neuropsychiatric disorder marked by severe motor and vocal tics, often accompanied by other mental health issues, and can require more invasive treatments like Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) for severe cases that don't respond to standard therapies.
  • DBS targets specific brain regions, such as the globus pallidus internus and the thalamus, and has shown effectiveness in reducing tic severity and improving patients' quality of life, though results can vary based on factors like electrode placement.
  • Ethical concerns surrounding DBS include surgical risks, the importance of informed consent, and potential impacts on cognitive and emotional development, highlighting the need for ongoing research and ethical discussions as DBS technology evolves.
