Distribution of nitric oxide synthase in intracardiac ganglion cells located in human, monkey and canine right atria was histologically investigated using the reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) diaphorase method and acetylcholinesterase histochemistry. In the intracardiac ganglion, many large neurons exhibited both positive reactions, whereas some of the NADPH diaphorase-positive small neuronal cells were shown with negative acetylcholinesterase reaction.

We investigated aging-related changes in nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate-diaphorase (NADPH-d) in the spinal cord of aged dogs. At all levels of the spinal cord examined, NADPH-d activities were observed in neurons and fibers in the superficial dorsal horn (DH), dorsal gray commissure (DGC) and around the central canal (CC). A significant number of NADPH-d positive macro-diameter fibers, termed megaloneurites, were discovered in the sacral spinal cord (S1-S3) segments of aged dogs.

As standard therapy for prostate cancer, radical prostatectomy causes cavernous nerve (CN) injury and increases fibrosis and hypoxia-induced penile structural alterations. This study aimed to determine the potential beneficial effects of adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) and l-arginine alone or in combination on the penile erection in a rat model of erectile dysfunction caused by bilateral cavernous nerve transection (CNT). Male rats ( = 35) were randomized into five groups: Sham-operated; CNT (4-weeks); CNT plus ADSCs (1 × 10 cells by intracavernosal injection); CNT plus l-arginine (4 weeks, 10 mg/kg/day, oral); and ADSCs combined with l-arginine in CNT.

Temporal lobe epilepsy is the most drug-resistant type with the highest incidence among the other focal epilepsies. Metabolic manipulations are of great interest among others, glycolysis inhibitors like 2-deoxy D-glucose (2-DG) being the most promising intervention. Here, we sought to investigate the effects of 2-DG treatment on cellular and circuit level electrophysiological properties using patch-clamp and local field potentials recordings and behavioral alterations such as depression and anxiety behaviors, and changes in nitric oxide signaling in the intrahippocampal kainic acid model.

Retinoic acid (RA) is a biologically active form of vitamin A. Teratogenicity has been observed in pregnant mammals exposed to high doses of vitamin A. We investigated the distribution of nitrergic neurons in rat prefrontal cortex (PFC) at developmental stages 7 days to young adulthood under physiological conditions and after prenatal application of all trans-RA.
