Genome fingerprinting by field inversion gel electrophoresis (FIGE) was utilized to typify 129 isolates of Pseudomonas cepacia (Pc) from 59 patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) and from environmental cultures in the CF ward. The aim of this study was to assess whether a segregation policy avoided colonization of CF patients by nosocomial strains and contamination of the environment by colonized individuals, whether or not an 'epidemic strain' was present in the ward and whether cross-colonization occurred in CF individuals subjected to prolonged close contact. The Pc strains of each patient remained unchanged over time; 78% of the genome finger printings (GFP) were individual, whereas the others gave rise to 9 GFP groups. A spirometer was probably contaminated by a newly colonized patient. Adequate sanitary measures and avoidance of excessive promiscuity are helpful for limiting but are unable to eliminate Pc transmission in the CF ward. Direct or indirect transmission, however seems, more frequent in CF patients in contacts outside the hospital.

Following implantation, infections, inflammatory reactions, corrosion, mismatches in the elastic modulus, stress shielding and excessive wear are the most frequent reasons for orthopedic implant failure. Natural polymer-based coatings showed especially good results in achieving better cell attachment, growth and tissue-implant integration, and it was found that the inclusions of nanosized fillers in the coating structure improves biomineralization and consequently implant osseointegration, as the nanoparticles represent calcium phosphate nucleation centers and lead to the deposition of highly organized hydroxyapatite crystallites on the implant surface. In this study, magnetic nanoparticles synthesized by the co-precipitation method were used for the preparation of cellulose acetate composite coatings through the phase-inversion method.

Trench MOS Barrier Schottky (TMBS) rectifiers offer superior static and dynamic electrical characteristics when compared with planar Schottky rectifiers for a given active die size. The unique structure of TMBS devices allows for efficient manipulation of the electric field, enabling higher doping concentrations in the drift region and thus achieving a lower forward voltage drop (VF) and reduced leakage current (IR) while maintaining high breakdown voltage (BV). While the use of trenches to push electric fields away from the mesa surface is a widely employed concept for vertical power devices, a significant gap exists in the analytical modeling of this effect, with most prior studies relying heavily on computationally intensive numerical simulations.

The methylotrophic yeast belongs to the group of homothallic fungi that are able to spontaneously change their mating type by inversion of chromosomal DNA in the MAT locus region. As a result, natural and genetically engineered cultures of these yeasts typically contain a mixture of sexually dimorphic cells that are prone to self-diploidisation and spore formation accompanied by genetic rearrangements. These characteristics pose a significant challenge to the development of genetically stable producers for industrial use.

The target reservoir is a typical blocky bottom water reservoir. There are several interlayers of varying scales inside it, which impact the characteristics of the oil production and water breakthrough curves of the wells in the water flooding development oilfield, resulting in strong heterogeneity within the reservoir. The Sangtamu Oilfield has an average well spacing of approximately 600 m, causing a challenge in accurately identifying the range of small-scale interlayer spreading.

We report an experimental study on how topological defects induced by cylindrical air inclusions in the ferroelectric nematic liquid crystal RM734 are influenced by ionic doping, including an ionic surfactant and ionic polymer. Our results show that subtle differences in molecular structure can lead to distinct surface alignments and topological defects. The ionic surfactant induces a planar alignment, with two -1/2 line defects adhering to the cylindrical bubble surface.
