Published: June 1996

A 31-year-old male presented to a neuropsychiatric service for the first time with an erotomatic delusion among other symptoms. He had suffered significant brain damage several times in the past and experienced a recent loss. After extensive evaluation, a trial of haloperidol resulted in some improvement. However, the erotomanic delusion remained unchanged.

Is retrograde amnesia associated with an ability to know who we are and imagine what we will be like in the future? To answer this question, we had S.G., a patient with focal retrograde amnesia following hypoxia, two brain-damaged (control) patients with no retrograde memory deficits, and healthy controls judge whether each of a series of trait adjectives was descriptive of their present self, future self, another person, and that person in the future, and later recognize studied traits among distractors.

With the advent of advanced analytical methods applied to functional neuroimaging and neurophysiological data, cerebral conditions have been defined that challenge the established classification of disorders of consciousness. A subset of brain-damaged patients has been identified who cannot carry out motor commands, but who exhibit patterns of cerebral activation during mental imagery tasks that are indistinguishable from those in healthy controls. This condition, termed "cognitive motor dissociation," has overturned many assumptions regarding the detection, diagnosis, prognosis, and care of patients with brain injury.

Attention allows us to prioritize the processing of external information according to our goals, but also to cope with sudden, unforeseen events. Attention processes rely on the coordinated activity of large-scale brain networks. At the cortical level, these systems are mainly organized in fronto-parietal networks, with functional and anatomical asymmetries in favor of the right hemisphere.

The speed of information processing is one of the most reliable indices of cognitive efficiency. The most common way to evaluate this ability is to assess reaction times (RTs). The technical limitations of previous tasks, aimed at measuring RT, have motivated us to develop a new battery for their evaluation.
