The treatment of winery wastes by using appropriate management technologies is of utmost need in order to reduce to a minimum their disposal and avoid negative environmental impacts. This is of particular interest for grape marc, the main solid by-product of the winery industry. However, comparative studies on a pilot-scale dealing with the impact of earthworms on marc derived from both red and white grape varieties during vermicomposting are still scarce.

In this study, the effect of glutathione (GSH) on the activity of hydrolytic enzymes of lysosomal, microsomal, and cytosolic fractions was studied in the mouse hepatocytes. The experiments involved 30 Swiss male mice, divided into the experimental and control groups of 15 mice each. The former group received injections of 12 μL/g of GSH solution at a dose of 100 μg/g body weight, whereas the latter received 12 μL/g of physiological saline, all given intraperitoneally daily for 7 days.

Effects of graphene oxides and silver-graphene oxides on aquatic microbial activity.

Sci Total Environ

February 2019

Department of Environmental Engineering, Konkuk University, Seoul 143-701, Republic of Korea. Electronic address:

Graphene oxide (GO) and silver-graphene oxide (Ag-GO) are used in various fields, such as biotechnology and environmental engineering, due to their unique material properties, including hydrophilicity, high surface area, mechanical strength, and antibacterial activity. With the increase in the usage of such nanomaterials, they are likely to enter the aquatic environment during the manufacturing process, product use, and disposal. However, the effects of GO and Ag-GO on aquatic microbial activities are not well understood.

The rate-limiting step of wastewater treatment is the breakdown of polymers by extracellular enzyme activity (EEA). The efficacy of EEA on biomass from full scale conventional activated sludge (AS) and modified AS with bench scale and full scale rotating biofilm reactors (RBR) was compared. The maximum amino-peptidase EEA was 394 ± 34 μmolL min for the bench RBR which was 11.
