In 181 E. coli strains isolated from sick children having chronic pyelonephritis and risk factors of its development, as well as from healthy children, the complex of phenotypic signs, and among them bacterial persistence markers (antilysozyme, anticomplementary and "anti-interferon" activity), adhesive capacity, antibiotic resistance and colicinogenicity, were analyzed. The specific bioprofiles of E. coli, the causative agents of pyelonephritis, were established. The most informative biological characteristics of E. coli were determined and used as the basis for the development of the algorithm for differentiating the causative agents of pyelonephritis from transitory and contaminating flora. The effectiveness of the proposed diagnostic algorithm was confirmed by clinical approbation.

Atherosclerosis is one of the leading causes of ischemic cardiovascular disease worldwide. Recent studies indicated that vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) play an indispensable role in the progression of atherosclerosis. Exosomes derived from mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have demonstrated promising clinical applications in the treatment of atherosclerosis.

Background: Primary aldosteronism (PA) is the leading surgically treatable cause of hypertension, with adrenalectomy as the definitive treatment for unilateral PA (UPA). However, some patients have persistent hypertension after surgery. This study aims to identify preoperative factors affecting surgical outcomes and develop a predictive model for postoperative hypertension resolution.

Background: Inadequate treatment of acute rejection (AR) in pediatric kidney transplant recipients (KTR) can contribute to early allograft failure. Serum creatinine is an insensitive marker of allograft function, especially in the pediatric population, and may not detect ongoing rejection after treatment. We evaluated the utility of follow-up biopsies to detect persistent inflammation and future episodes of rejection.

Objectives: Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccination has off-target effects on disease risk for unrelated infections and immune responses to vaccines. This study aimed to determine the immunomodulatory effects of BCG vaccination on immune responses to vaccines against SARS-CoV-2.
Methods: Blood samples, from a subset of 275 SARS-CoV-2-naïve healthcare workers randomised to BCG vaccination (BCG group) or no BCG vaccination (Control group) in the BRACE trial, were collected before and 28 days after the primary course (two doses) of ChAdOx1-S (Oxford-AstraZeneca) or BNT162b2 (Pfizer-BioNTech) vaccination.

Coal tar-related products as a source of polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) are particularly concerning due to high PAC concentrations and inadequate source management. Benzo[b]carbazole, a benzocarbazole isomer exclusively found in coal tar-derived products, acts as an ideal marker to distinguish coal tar sources from others, enabling more robust quantification of coal tar contributions to PACs. To evaluate the historical and recent contributions of coal tar-related sources to the levels of PACs in Lake Ontario and associated ecological risk, we analyzed 31 PACs and 3 BCBz isomers in surface sediments and a sediment core.
