The accurate assessment of body composition in cirrhosis is challenging as fluid accumulation affects most techniques. The whole-body counter is a state-of-the-art method that measures total body potassium (TBK) unbiased by fluid, from which body cell mass (BCM) is derived. This pilot study in 20 patients with cirrhosis evaluated bedside tools including the liver frailty index (LFI), bioimpedance analysis-based phase angle, calf circumference (CC), and BMI (body mass index)/edema-adjusted CC, and explored their association with TBK and BCM.

[Acute hyperkalemia management].

Rev Med Liege

November 2024

Service de Néphrologie, Dialyse et Transplantation, CHU Liège, Belgique.

Article Synopsis
  • * The speed at which potassium levels increase is crucial because quicker changes can lead to severe and potentially life-threatening symptoms; thus, acute hyperkalemia requires immediate treatment.
  • * Although there's no universal standard for measuring the severity of hyperkalemia, electrocardiogram (ECG) changes are important indicators; this article discusses current knowledge and suggests a management approach for acute cases.

The appropriate use of predictive equations in estimating body composition through bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) depends on the device used and the subject's age, geographical ancestry, healthy status, physical activity level and sex. However, the presence of many isolated predictive equations in the literature makes the correct choice challenging, since the user may not distinguish its appropriateness. Therefore, the present systematic review aimed to classify each predictive equation in accordance with the independent parameters used.
