Comparative study of the immune sera from rabbits immunized with both formol and native cardiotoxins, cardiotoxin incorporated into sphingomyelin-phosphatidylcholine-cholesterol liposome stabilized with osmium tetroxide, and a cardiotoxin-succinylated bovine albumin conjugate was performed. The latter produced antibodies identified by immunodiffusion assay. The highest survival was observed in animals treated with antiserum to cardiotoxin-albumin conjugate, followed by antitoxin to combination of formol and native cardiotoxins. Antiserum to cardiotoxin in liposome was ineffective.

Structural features of dioxane lignin: A comparative study with milled wood and formaldehyde-stabilized lignins.

Int J Biol Macromol

January 2025

Core Facility Center "Arktika", Northern (Arctic) Federal University named after M.V. Lomonosov, Northern Dvina Emb., 17, Arkhangelsk 163002, Russian Federation. Electronic address:

Dioxane lignin (DL) is isolated from plant material under mild acidolysis conditions and is widely used in many studies as a representative sample of protolignin, an alternative to milled wood lignin (MWL). However, the structural changes caused by hydrolytic degradation reactions during DL extraction are still poorly understood. In this work, an integrated approach based on 2D NMR and high-resolution mass spectrometry was used to establish the features of the lignin structure on the example of pine lignin isolated using dioxane under various conditions: MWL, DL and "formaldehyde stabilized" lignin (LSF).

Hydrodynamic characterization of the FtsZ protein from Escherichia coli demonstrates the presence of linear and lateral trimers.

FtsZ is a bacterial protein that plays a crucial role in cytokinesis by forming the Z-ring. This ring acts as a scaffold to recruit other division proteins and guide the synthesis of septal peptidoglycan, which leads to cell constriction. In its native state, the FtsZ protein from Escherichia coli (EcFtsZ) is a multi-oligomer comprising dimers, trimers, tetramers, and hexamers in a dynamic self-association equilibrium depending on its concentration.

Efficient bioassimilation of one-carbon (C1) feedstocks is often hindered by the toxicity of C1 substrates and/or intermediates. We compared the toxicity of several common C1 substrates/intermediates and found that formaldehyde imposes the highest toxicity on the representative bacterium . Besides causing chromosomal DNA and protein damage effects, here, we revealed that formaldehyde greatly impairs cell membranes.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluated the prevalence of protozoan parasites in stool samples from patients with gastrointestinal complaints at Kafkas University between 2019 and 2022.
  • A total of 2,267 samples were analyzed, revealing that 7.63% contained protozoan parasites, with the most common being a specific species detected at 4.06%.
  • The findings highlight the need for better hygiene, sanitation, and public health education to address ongoing intestinal protozoan infections, especially in vulnerable populations like children and the elderly.
