A correlation of the oxygen uptake and transport with photoplethysmography was studied in groups of persons with varying sympathetic tone. For this, noninvasive oximetry and photoplethysmography were applied. The findings indicated that the efficiency of oxygen transport in persons with marked sympathetic tone depended on the systolic constituent of a cardiac cycle and on the tone of precapillary vessels. The results suggests that the sympathetic nervous systems plays an important role in the coupling of microcirculatory processes at different hierarchic levels.
