The arrangement of the collagen fibrils of the lamina cribrosa was analyzed by using scanning electron microscopy with clinical regard to morphological alterations in cases of glaucoma at different stages. Adult eyes with no apparent pathological changes and specimens from patients with absolute glaucoma were studied. In the lamina cribrosa of nonpathological eyes the collagen fibrils are arranged circularly around the points of passage of axons and vessels. In specimens from glaucoma patients the characteristic circular alignment of the collagen fibrils around the penetrating axons is generally absent. The collagen fibrils are arranged in coarse bundles, showing no preferred alignment. The present study supports a new hypothesis for glaucoma pathogenesis.

Spinal cord trauma leads to the destruction of the highly organized cytoarchitecture that carries information along the axis of the spinal column. Currently, there are no clinically accepted strategies that can help regenerate severed axons after spinal cord injury (SCI). Hydrogels are soft biomaterials with high water content that are widely used as scaffolds to interface with the central nervous system (CNS).

The complex collagen network of the native meniscus and the gradient of the density and alignment of this network through the meniscal enthesis is essential for the proper mechanical function of these tissues. This architecture is difficult to recapitulate in tissue-engineered replacement strategies. Prenatally, the organization of the collagen fiber network is established and aggrecan content is minimal.

Powdered collagen is emerging as a promising topical hemostat owing to its adaptability to various wounds, active hemostatic abilities, and biosafety. The reproduction of a bionic structure similar to natural collagen is crucial for effective hemostasis and bioactivity. Additional factors relevant to clinical application include antimicrobial properties, minimal immune response, and straightforward preparation.

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a fatal disease defined by a progressive decline in lung function due to scarring and accumulation of extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins. The SOCS (Suppressor Of Cytokine Signaling) domain is a 40 amino acid conserved domain known to form a functional ubiquitin ligase complex targeting the Von Hippel Lindau (VHL) protein for proteasomal degradation. Here we show that the SOCS conserved domain operates as a molecular tool, to disrupt collagen and fibronectin fibrils in the ECM associated with fibrotic lung myofibroblasts.

Preoperative evaluation of the cross-sectional area of the semitendinosus tendon using magnetic resonance imaging is useful. However, studies comparing the cross-sectional area of the semitendinosus tendon on magnetic resonance imaging and the collagen fibril diameter of the semitendinosus tendon are lacking.
