Physical activity (PA) has pluripotential beneficial effects on body functions. These benefits include reduction in the incidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD), coronary heart disease (CHD), hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and death. In addition to these effects, PA exerts significant beneficial effects on sleep onset, duration and quality, which add to its beneficial effects.

The limited therapeutic outcomes and severe systemic toxicity of chemotherapy remain major challenges to the current clinical antitumor therapeutic regimen. Tumor-targeted drug delivery that diminishes the undifferentiated systemic distribution is a practical solution to ameliorating systemic toxicity. However, the tumor adaptive immune microenvironment still poses a great threat that compromises the therapeutic efficacy of chemotherapy by promoting the tolerance of the tumor cells.

The pluripotential evolution and journey of Botox (onabotulinumtoxinA).

Medicine (Baltimore)

July 2023

Professor Emeritus of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, New York, NY, USA.

Clinical use of onabotulinumtoxinA evolved based on strategic, hypothesis-driven applications, as well as serendipitous observations by physicians and patients. The success of onabotulinumtoxinA in blepharospasm and strabismus led to its study in other head and neck dystonias, followed by limb dystonia, tremor, and spasticity. The aesthetic use of onabotulinumtoxinA followed initial reports from patients of improved facial lines after injections for facial dystonias and hemifacial spasm.

The potential of stem cell therapy to tackle visual impairment.

J Pak Med Assoc

February 2023

Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, Aga Khan University, Karachi, Pakistan.

Visual impairment adversely impacts quality of life and affects more than 295 million individuals globally. Currently, there is no cure or tissue regenerative approaches in clinical practice for vision loss caused by corneal disease, glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and inherited retinal disease. Stem cells-based therapeutic approaches to diseases causing moderate to severe visual impairment have shown encouraging outcomes in animal models and in vitro studies.
