Objective: Histoplasmosis is a systemic, deep mycotic infection caused by Histoplasma capsulatum. Disseminated histoplasmosis (DH) is synonymous with HIV seropositive immunocompromised individuals; however, isolated histoplasmosis involving the head and neck mucosal sites mimicking malignancy is a clinical predicament. The result, in a superficial biopsy with marked pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia (PEH), in a tertiary care cancer center where the number of squamous carcinomas far outnumber the infectious diseases, could be catastrophic.

Relationship between microRNA genes incidence and cancer-associated genomic regions in canine tumors: a comprehensive bioinformatics study.

The role of microRNAs (miRNAs) in human cancer biology has been confirmed on a genome-wide scale through the high incidence of these genes in cancer-associated regions. We analyzed the association between canine miRNA genes and cancer-associated regions (deleted and amplified regions) using previously published array of comparative genomic hybridization data on 268 canine cancer samples-comprising osteosarcoma, breast cancer, leukemia, and colorectal cancer. We also assessed this relationship apropos the incidence of miRNA genes in the CpG islands of the canine genome assembly.

We present a carcinosarcoma ex non-recurrent pleomorphic adenoma composed of a large cell neuroendocrine carcinomatous component and a spindle cell sarcoma with myofibroblastic differentiation. The tumor contained a hyalinized transition zone where the classical PA appeared to acquire two different histopathological patterns of malignant transformation of the epithelial component. The carcinomatous component was strongly and diffusely positive for low-molecular weight cytokeratins (AE1-3), synaptophysin, thyroid transcription factor-1 and focally positive for chromogranin A.
