Department of Medicine, Division of Respiratory & Critical Care Medicine, 59053 National University Hospital, Singapore.

Article Synopsis
  • Clinical reasoning is a crucial part of medical education and practice, often examined through the lens of cognitive psychology.
  • The dominant theory guiding clinical reasoning has been dual process theory, which splits thinking into fast, intuitive processes and slower, analytical ones, but this model has limitations.
  • The authors propose a Bayesian-centric, intuitionist approach to clinical reasoning as a more accurate representation of how decisions are made in real clinical settings, along with strategies to enhance clinical thinking.

Advancements in brain imaging technologies have facilitated the development of "real-world" experimental scenarios. In this study, participants engaged in a household chore - completing a laundry cycle - while their frontal lobe brain activity was monitored using fNIRS. Participants completed this twice using both fragranced and unfragranced detergent, to explore if fNIRS is able to identify any differences in brain activity in response to subtle changes in stimuli.
