Assessing needs of people with cancer.

Contemp Nurse

Published: March 1996

The provision of complementary cancer care is a developing field. Recent surveys into the provision of complementary therapies have targeted not only the consumer but also the purchasers and providers of health care. There is interest amongst health authorities regarding the provision of complementary medicine as a cost effective intervention in the management of chronic conditions. There are a number of recent studies which aimed to address this issue. The Royal London Homoeopathic Hospital NHS Trust (RLHH), offers homoeopathy and other complementary therapies to support people living with cancer. A Macmillan Nurse, specialising in Complementary Therapies, was appointed at the RLHH to further develop the program of complementary cancer care. A patient survey performed to assist the development of the program showed that people living with cancer most wanted psychological help from complementary therapies. Since the provision of designated programs of complementary cancer care, expansion in the range of therapies offered has taken place.

Cluster Analysis of HCC Prognosis Using Preoperative AFP and DCP Levels: A Multi-Institutional Study.

J Gastrointest Surg

January 2025

Department of Gastroenterological and Transplant Surgery, Graduate School of Biomedical and Health Sciences Hiroshima University, Hiroshima University, Hiroshima, Japan.

Background: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains a leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide, characterized by high recurrence rates post-curative resection. Tumor markers des-gamma-carboxy prothrombin (DCP) and alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) are crucial for HCC diagnosis and prognosis, yet their roles in the modern era of HCC epidemiology require reevaluation.

Methods: This multi-institutional retrospective study analyzed 1,515 patients who underwent hepatectomy for primary HCC.

Predicting and managing liver fibrosis in biliary atresia.

Semin Pediatr Surg

January 2025

Section of Pediatric Surgery, Pediatric Liver and Gut Research Group, New Children's Hospital, University of Helsinki and Helsinki University Hospital, Helsinki, Finland; Pediatric Research Center, Children's Hospital, University of Helsinki and Helsinki University Hospital, Helsinki, Finland; Department of Women's and Children's Health, Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden. Electronic address:

Regardless of the underlying etiology and success of PE, progressive liver fibrosis and eventually cirrhosis represent the dominant pathology and the end-stage of BA. Ascending bile duct injury-induced cholestasis, inflammation and ductular reaction provide profibrogenic cytokine environment leading to myofibroblast activation and rapid progression of fibrosis especially after unsuccessful portoenterostomy. Although liver fibrosis and development of cirrhosis play a crucial role in determining BA outcomes, the exact prognostic significance and dynamics of mild to moderate liver fibrosis remain unclear.

Within mindfulness-based programs (MBPs), mixed results have been found for the role of childhood trauma as a moderator of depression outcomes. Furthermore, childhood trauma and PTSD symptoms have been identified as possible risk factors for the occurrence of meditation-related adverse effects (MRAE). The present research examined multiple forms of childhood trauma and PTSD symptoms as predictors of depression treatment outcomes and MRAEs.

Hearing in categories and speech perception at the "cocktail party".

PLoS One

January 2025

School of Communication Sciences & Disorders, University of Memphis, Memphis, Tennessee, United States of America.

We aimed to test whether hearing speech in phonetic categories (as opposed to a continuous/gradient fashion) affords benefits to "cocktail party" speech perception. We measured speech perception performance (recognition, localization, and source monitoring) in a simulated 3D cocktail party environment. We manipulated task difficulty by varying the number of additional maskers presented at other spatial locations in the horizontal soundfield (1-4 talkers) and via forward vs.

Background: Ankle sprain is a common clinical disease, which has the highest incidence rate among joint and ligament injuries. And acute ankle sprains can easily develop into chronic ankle instability, thereby increasing the difficulty of treatment. The current clinical guidelines for post-acute ankle sprains are still controversial.
