Alzheimers Dement

December 2024

Postgraduate Program in Psychology, Salgado de Oliveira University, Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Background: The use of blood biomarkers predictive of the presence of amyloid Aβ and ApoE4 is an effective tool to facilitate a timely AD diagnosis. About a third of dementia cases can be attributed to potentially modifiable risk factors, and the incidence of the disease can be reduced by addressing these factors. Memory Workshops integrated with early detection and actions on risk factors is an operational strategy that is both therapeutic and preventive.

Background: Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is associated with significant mortality and morbidity. The impact of SAH on human glymphatic function remains unknown.

Methods: This prospective, controlled study investigated whether human glymphatic function is altered after SAH, how it differs over time, and possible underlying mechanisms.

Objective: To evaluate the effect of a blood conservation program on trends in use of donor blood products and early clinical outcomes in infants undergoing open heart surgery.

Methods: Four hundred nine patients younger than age 1 year undergoing open-heart surgery between October 1, 2020, and June 30, 2023, were reviewed. The study period was divided into 4 eras with the first era as a before blood conservation baseline using traditional blood management.

Limited restoration of T cell subset distribution and immune function in older people living with HIV-1 receiving HAART.

Immun Ageing

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Genetic Evolution & Animal Models, Key Laboratory of Bioactive Peptides of Yunnan Province, KIZ-CUHK Joint Laboratory of Bioresources and Molecular Research in Common Diseases, Kunming Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Kunming, 650223, Yunnan, China.

Background: Older people living with HIV-1 (PLWH) experience a dual burden from the combined effects of aging and HIV-1 infection, resulting in significant immune dysfunction. Despite receiving HAART, immune reconstitution is not fully optimized. The objective of this study was to investigate the impact of aging and HAART on T cell subsets and function in PLWH across different age groups, thereby providing novel insights into the prognosis of older PLWH.

Satellite DNA shapes dictate pericentromere packaging in female meiosis.

Nature

January 2025

Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics, Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA, USA.

The abundance and sequence of satellite DNA at and around centromeres is evolving rapidly despite the highly conserved and essential process through which the centromere directs chromosome inheritance. The impact of such rapid evolution is unclear. Here we find that sequence-dependent DNA shape dictates packaging of pericentromeric satellites in female meiosis through a conserved DNA-shape-recognizing chromatin architectural protein, high mobility group AT-hook 1 (HMGA1).
