Air pollutants and respiratory hypersensitivity.

Epidemiological evidence suggests that an increase in liquid petroleum derived pollutants is associated with exacerbation of allergic airway disease, and that the effects of pollution may occur 1-2 days later. Laboratory based studies have demonstrated that the pollutants responsible for the adverse effects on respiratory health include nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulphur dioxide (SO2), ozone (O3) and respirable particulates (PM10). More recently, studies of asthmatic individuals exposed to O3, NO2 and a combination of NO2 and SO2 have indicated that these agents increase the airway responsiveness of these individuals to inhaled allergen, and that this effect may be maximal 24 h after exposure to the pollutants. Studies investigating the putative mechanisms underlying the effects of these pollutants suggest that exposure to these agents may lead to perturbation of the airway epithelium and release of pro-inflammatory mediators from the epithelial cells, which then influence the activity of inflammatory cells, such as eosinophils.

Air pollution in cities, especially NO, is linked to numerous health problems, ranging from mortality to mental health challenges and attention deficits in children. While cities globally have initiated policies to curtail emissions, real-time monitoring remains challenging due to limited environmental sensors and their inconsistent distribution. This gap hinders the creation of adaptive urban policies that respond to the sequence of events and daily activities affecting pollution in cities.

Objective: [Cu]Cu-ATSM is a radiotherapeutics under clinical trials. It is necessary to take appropriate measures to limit its exposure and ensures its airborne concentrations do not exceed legally permitted levels. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to measure the airborne radioactivity concentration in the inpatient room after administering [Cu]Cu-ATSM to patients.

Under the background of climate change, the escalating air pollution and extreme weather events have been identified as risk factors for chronic respiratory diseases (CRD), causing serious public health burden worldwide. This review aims to summarize the effects of changed atmospheric environment caused by climate change on CRD. Results indicated an increased risk of CRD (mainly COPD, asthma) associated with environmental factors, such as air pollutants, adverse meteorological conditions, extreme temperatures, sandstorms, wildfire, and atmospheric allergens.

κ-Carrageenan tetrasaccharide ameliorates particulate matter-induced defects in skin hydration of human keratinocytes cells and skin barrier disorders.

College of Ocean Food and Biological Engineering, Jimei University, Xiamen 361021, China; Fujian Provincial Key Laboratory of Food Microbiology and Enzyme Engineering, Xiamen 361021, China. Electronic address:

Urban air pollutants, mainly represented by PM containing organic and inorganic substances, can penetrate the human skin and trigger oxidative stress, potentially causing skin barrier damage and aging. κ-Carrageenan oligosaccharides as degradation products of natural sulfated polysaccharide have a great potential for skin moisturization as well as improving oxidative stress and inflammation. In this study, κ-carrageenan tetrasaccharide was obtained by enzymatic digestion of κ-carrageenan, and its role in alleviating particulate matter-induced inflammatory response in HaCaT keratinocyte cell line and skin barrier dysfunction was evaluated.

Departamento de Química e Energia. Faculdade de Engenharia e Ciências, UNESP/Campus Guaratinguetá. Guaratinguetá SP Brasil.

This study evaluated the role of temperature and fine particulate matter in hospitalizations of children living in Cuiabá-MT, obtained from DATASUS, between 01/01/2016 and 12/31/2018. Daily concentrations of the pollutant fine particulate matter were estimated using the CAMS mathematical model, made available by CPTEC. Diagnoses of tracheitis and laryngitis, pneumonia, bronchitis, bronchiolitis and asthma were included.
