Fucans, sulfated polysaccharides extracted from brown seaweeds, have been shown to be endowed with inhibitory effects cell growth in various experimental models. We studied both the antiproliferative and antitumor properties of a fucoidan extract (HF) obtained from the brown seaweed Ascophyllum nodosum on a cell line derived from a non-small-cell human bronchopulmonary carcinoma (NSCLC-N6), this type of carcinoma is particularly chemo-resistant. HF exerts in vitro a reversible antiproliferative activity with a block observed in the G1 phase the cell cycle. Studies performed with the NSCLC-bearing nude mice show antitumor activity at subtoxic doses. These preliminary results indicate that HF exhibits inhibitory effect both in vitro and in vivo and is very potent antitumor agent in cancer therapy.

Seaweed polysaccharides such as alginate, carrageenan, agar, and ulvan are emerging as key bioresources in sustainable agriculture due to their unique structural characteristics and functional properties. This review highlights their potential as eco-friendly biostimulants capable of enhancing soil health, plant growth, and stress resilience. Specific mechanisms, including the gel-forming capacity of alginate, ion exchange abilities, and the hydrophilic nature of these polysaccharides, enable improved water retention, nutrient uptake, and plant productivity under adverse conditions, including drought, salinity, and extreme temperatures.

Biostimulants are an emerging and innovative class of products that may mitigate the adverse effects of extreme heat, but research on their efficacy in fruit crops is limited. This study addressed this knowledge gap by evaluating the performance of three biostimulants, FRUIT ARMOR™, Optysil®, and KelpXpress™ [active ingredients glycine betaine, silicon, and kelp (Ascophyllum nodosum) extract, respectively] applied to three raspberry genotypes exposed to high temperatures (T ≥ 35 °C/day) inside a glasshouse. 'Meeker' consistently maintained high chlorophyll fluorescence (F/F) and photosynthesis under control and biostimulant treatments.

Seaweed-derived compounds are a renewable resource utilised in the manufacturing and food industry. This study focuses on an enriched seaweed extract (ESE) isolated from The ESE was screened for antiviral activity by plaque reduction assays against influenza A/Puerto Rico/8/1934 H1N1 (PR8), A/X-31 H3N2 (X31) and A/England/195/2009 H1N1 (Eng195), resulting in the complete inhibition of infection.
