Direct alpha spectrometry with three different filter types was investigated for the determination of thorium air concentrations at workplaces in the manufacturing process of discharge lamps containing thoriated tungsten electrodes. The method was compared with neutron activation analysis over an activity range of five orders of magnitude. Within the experimental limits of error, both methods were found to be comparable with respect to sensitivity and accuracy. The advantage of direct alpha spectrometry, however, is that it is less laborious than neutron activation analysis and that it supplies information on the degree of radioactive equilibrium of the thorium series, which is important with regard to the estimation of dose.

We investigated the interplay of cardiovascular autonomic and inflammatory profiles in persons with extreme longevity (PEL), their direct offsprings (DO), and a group of controls matched for age and sex with the DO. Cardiac autonomic control was assessed through the heart rate variability (HRV) using spectral and symbolic analysis. The plasma concentration and gene expression of interleukin (IL)-10, IL-6, and TNF-α were quantified.

Human periodontal ligament (hPDL) is continuously exposed to mechanical forces that can induce inflammatory responses in resident stem cells (hPDLSCs). Here, we review the impact of mechanical force on hPDLSCs, focusing on the activation of inflammatory cytokines and related signalling pathways, which subsequently influence periodontal tissue remodelling. The effects of various mechanical forces, including compressive, shear, and tensile forces, on hPDLSCs are discussed.

Successful immunotherapy relies on both intratumoral and systemic immunity, which is yet to be achieved for most patients with cancer. Here, we identify P4HA1, encoding prolyl 4-hydroxylase 1, as a crucial regulator of CD8 T cell differentiation strongly upregulated in tumor-draining lymph nodes (TDLNs) and hypoxic tumor microenvironment. P4HA1 accumulates in mitochondria, disrupting the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle through aberrant α-ketoglutarate and succinate metabolism, promoting mitochondria unfitness and exhaustion while suppressing progenitor expansion.

Medicinal plants serve as vital resources for preventing and treating diseases, with their flowers, fruits, leaves, roots, or entire plants being utilized in the pharmaceutical industry or as direct therapeutic agents. During our investigation of microfungi associated with medicinal plants in Guizhou and Sichuan Provinces, China, several asexual and sexual fungal morphs were collected. Multi-locus phylogenetic analysis based on combined ITS, LSU, SSU and datasets revealed that these taxa are related to the family Dictyosporiaceae.

The enzyme topoisomerase II alpha (TOP2A) plays a critical role in DNA replication and cell proliferation, making it a promising target for cancer therapy. In epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC), TOP2A overexpression is associated with poor prognosis and resistance to conventional treatments. This review explores the biological functions of TOP2A in EOC and discusses its potential as a therapeutic target.
