[Basedow disease following metastatic thyroid cancer].

Presse Med

Service d'Endocrinologie, Maladies métaboliques et Nutrition, Hôpital Nord, Marseille.

Published: April 1996

Objectives: Metastatic thyroid carcinoma rarely provokes hyperthyroidism. We describe here the main characteristics of this association observed in a 48-year-old woman.

Case Report: The patient had presented signs of hyperthyroidism for one year. Clinical examination revealed severe Graves' disease with nodular goiter. Presurgery investigations demonstrated thyroid carcinoma and lung metastasis. Thyroid stimulating immunoglobulins were elevated. After total thyroidectomy, hyperthyroidism persisted, indicating the functional nature of the lung metastases.

Discussion: The effect of thyroid stimulating immunoglobulins on the clinical course of thyroid carcinoma and distant metastases remains unknown.

Objective: Despite the identification of various prognostic factors for anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (ATC) patients over the years, a precise prognostic tool for these patients is still lacking. This study aimed to develop and validate a prognostic model for predicting survival outcomes for ATC patients using random survival forests (RSF), a machine learning algorithm.

Methods: A total of 1222 ATC patients were extracted from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database and randomly divided into a training set of 855 patients and a validation set of 367 patients.

Objective: To compare the clinical outcomes between radiofrequency ablation (RFA) and microwave ablation (MWA) for the treatment of T1N0M0 papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) in a large cohort.

Materials And Methods: This retrospective study included 1111 patients with solitary T1N0M0 PTC treated with RFA (n = 894) or MWA (n = 215) by experienced physicians. A propensity score matching was used to compare disease progression, including lymph node metastases (LNM), recurrent tumors and persistent tumors, recurrence-free survival (RFS), volume reduction ratio (VRR), and complications between the RFA and MWA groups.

Role of radiofrequency ablation in the treatment of symptomatic distant metastasis of thyroid cancer.

Skeletal Radiol

January 2025

Department of Radiology and Research Institute of Radiology, Asan Medical Center, University of Ulsan College of Medicine, 86 Asanbyeongwon-Gil, Songpa-Gu, Seoul, Korea.

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for the treatment of symptomatic distant metastasis of differentiated thyroid carcinoma.

Materials And Methods: The medical records of 12 patients who underwent RFA for the palliative treatment of 18 symptomatic distant metastases from thyroid cancer between January 2008 and December 2020 were analyzed. All patients were assessed for their degree of discomfort and underwent periodical evaluations as outpatients, including clinical examination, imaging, and serologic markers.

Purpose: The transoral endoscopic thyroidectomy vestibular approach (TOETVA) is distinguished by its ability to leave no visible scars on the body's surface. Currently, there is still a lack of single-center large sample size analysis on the learning curve of TOETVA, especially for the treatment of thyroid cancer. This study aims to fill this void by presenting a comprehensive analysis of the learning curve and assessing the procedure's feasibility in managing thyroid cancer.

This report describes a rare case of a paraganglioma occurring beneath the vocal folds. During the preoperative biopsy, we encountered significant hemorrhage, forcing us to stop the procedure and preventing us from obtaining a definitive diagnosis. Despite these challenges, the eventual surgery had a good outcome.
