From 1993 to 1994, in our centre, laser-assisted hatching was performed on 2- to 4-cell stage embryos obtained from in-vitro fertilization (IVF) patients. We treated 376 embryos from 96 patients with repeated IVF failures (two to four attempts) (group A) and 397 embryos from 111 patients undergoing IVF for the first time (group B). Embryos were transferred immediately after the laser treatment. Both groups were compared to control groups (A' and B') whose embryos were transferred with intact zona pellucida (ZP). The resulting clinical pregnancies were 41 in A and 44 in B versus 24 in A' and 23 in B' respectively. The pregnancy rates per patient were 42.7 and 39.6% versus 23.1 and 19% in the control groups (P < or = 0.05), while the implantation rates per embryo were 12.2% in A and 11.8% in B versus 7.3% and 7.1%. These results show that laser zona thinning of human embryos at 48 h after egg retrieval significantly increases the implantation and pregnancy rate (P < or = 0.05).

Artificial intelligence applied to time-lapse microscopy may revolutionize embryo selection in IVF by automating data collection and standardizing the assessments. In this context, blastocyst expansion dynamics, although being associated with reproductive fitness, have been poorly studied. This retrospective study (N = 2184 blastocysts from 786 cycles) exploited both technologies to picture the association between embryo and inner-cell-mass (ICM) area in µm, the ICM/Trophectoderm ratio, and the zona pellucida thickness in µm (zp-T) at sequential blastocyst expansion stages, with (i) euploidy and (ii) live-birth per transfer (N = 548 transfers).

Optical fiber tapers have been widely proposed and demonstrated as reliable optical fiber structures for sensing, lasers, and supercontinuum generation applications. This paper proposes an innovative approach to fabricating optical fiber tapers using plasma as the heat source. From our literature review, and to the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that plasma has been used as the heat source for producing optical fiber tapers.

In the last decades, to enhance success rates in assisted reproductive technology (ART) cycles, scientists have continually tried to optimize embryo culture and selection to increase clinical outcomes. In this scenario, the application of laser technology has increased considerably worldwide and is currently applied across ART in several ways: for assisted hatching (AH) or thinning of the zona pellucida (ZP), embryo biopsy, to immobilize and select the sperm during intracytoplasmic sperm injection, as well as to induce artificial blastocyst shrinkage before cryopreservation. Laser-AH has been suggested as a procedure to improve embryo implantation: the concept is that drilling holes through or thinning of the ZP could improve the hatching process and implantation.

There is a growing demand for engineered bone tissues custom-designed to match the patient-specific defect size and in vitro models for studying bone diseases and/or drug screening. Herein, we propose a bioprinted bone tissue construct using SaOs-2 cells within alginate/gellan gum/hydroxyapatite inks. Different ink formulations were developed with varying hydroxyapatite content and then evaluated for viscoelasticity, printability, biomineralization properties, post-printing viability, proliferation, metabolic activity, and osteogenic phenotype of SaOs-2-encapsulated cells.

Background: Laser-assisted hatching (LAH) stands as the predominant technique for removing the zona pellucida (ZP) in embryos, primarily consisting of two methods: drilling laser-assisted hatching (D-LAH) and thinning laser-assisted hatching (T-LAH). Presently, both methods have limitations, and their comparative efficacy for embryo implantation and clinical pregnancy remains uncertain.
Aim: Evaluate the impact of D-LAH and T-LAH on clinical pregnancy rates within assisted reproductive technology (ART).
