Discovering electrocatalysts that can efficiently convert carbon dioxide (CO) to valuable fuels and feedstocks using excess renewable electricity is an emergent carbon-neutral technology. A single metal atom embedded in doped graphene, , single-atom catalyst (SAC), possesses high activity and selectivity for electrochemical CO reduction (COR) to CO, yet further reduction to hydrocarbons is challenging. Here, using density functional theory calculations, we investigate stability and reactivity of a broad SAC chemical space with various metal centers (3d transition metals) and dopants (2p dopants of B, N, O; 3p dopants of P, S) as electrocatalysts for COR to methane and methanol.

Photothermal Coating on Zinc Alloy for Controlled Biodegradation and Improved Osseointegration.

Adv Sci (Weinh)

January 2025

Department of Prosthodontics, Peking University School and Hospital of Stomatology, No.22, Zhongguancun South Avenue, Haidian District, Beijing, 100081, China.

Zinc (Zn) and its alloys are promising biomaterials for orthopedic applications due to their degradability and mechanical properties. Zn plays a crucial role in bone formation, but excessive early release may cause cytotoxicity and inhibit osseointegration. To solve this, we developed a near-infrared (NIR) light-controlled polycaprolactone/copper-sulfur (PCL/CuS) coating that slows degradation and enhances osseointegration of Zn alloys.

Clinical Problem Solving: Two Patients With Gait Instability and Difficulty With Hand Coordination.

Neurohospitalist

January 2025

Instructor in Neurology, Harvard Medical School and Attending Physician, Stroke Division, Brigham & Women's Hospital, Boston, MA, USA.

Subacute-to-chronic gait instability has a broad differential diagnosis. The neurological exam can help elucidate the localization and suggest an underlying etiology of the symptomatology, which can lead to a more focused diagnostic approach. Two patients are described - 1 with a month of worsening difficulty with ambulation that evolved to bilateral hand discoordination and another with 18 months of progressive difficulty with ambulation that also then progressed to involve her bilateral hands.

Enhancing Mechanical and Antibacterial Performance of Tire Waste/Epoxidized Natural Rubber Blends Using Modified Zinc Oxide-Silica.

Polymers (Basel)

January 2025

Sustainable Polymer & Innovative Composite Materials Research Group, Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science, King Mongkut's University of Technology Thonburi, Bangkok 10140, Thailand.

This study investigates the synergistic effects of incorporating modified zinc oxide-silica (ZnO-SiO) into tire waste (TW) and epoxidized natural rubber (ENR) blends, with a focus on crosslinking dynamics, mechanical reinforcement, and antibacterial activity. The addition of ZnO-SiO significantly enhanced crosslink density, as evidenced by increased torque and accelerated cure rates. An optimal concentration of 10 phr was found to yield the highest performance.

Background: Autoimmune thyroiditis (AIT), encompassing Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT), is a prevalent chronic autoimmune disorder characterized by lymphocytic infiltration and the presence of anti-thyroid antibodies. It is the primary cause of primary hypothyroidism and affects women more frequently than men. Nearly 95% of individuals with HT exhibit thyroid peroxidase antibodies or thyroglobulin antibodies.
