Kidney diseases are widespread and represent a considerable medical, social and economic burden. However, there has been marked progress in understanding the immunological aspects of kidney disease. This includes the identification of distinct intrarenal immunological niches and characterization of kidney disease endotypes according to the underlying molecular immunopathology, as well as a better understanding of the pathological roles for T cells, mononuclear phagocytes and B cells and the renal elements they target.

Background: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an inflammatory disease of the joints mediated by immune cells. As an immune-related mode of cell death, pyroptosis has yet to be fully understood in RA. This research identified novel pyroptosis-related markers in RA and confirmed its functional significance in RA.

Objectives: Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is a thrombotic microangiopathy associated with severe deficiency in ADAMTS13. ADAMTS13 deficiency may be secondary to absent or dysfunctional protein production due to mutations in the ADAMTS13 gene (congenital TTP) or autoantibody-mediated clearance and/or inhibition (immune-mediated TTP). This autoimmunity may, albeit rarely, occur secondary to certain medications (eg, ticlopidine).

Vitiligo is an autoimmune disease characterized by the loss of functional melanocytes in the hair follicles and epidermis, leading to white patches on the skin and mucous membranes. Alopecia areata (AA) is a common immune-mediated condition in which autoimmune attack on hair follicles cause non-scarring hair loss. Both diseases significantly impact patients's physical and mental health.

Objectives: COVID-19 and systemic sclerosis (SSc) share multiple similarities in their clinical manifestations, alterations in immune response, and therapeutic options. These resemblances have also been identified in other immune-mediated inflammatory diseases where a common genetic component has been found. Thus, we decided to evaluate for the first time this shared genetic architecture with SSc.
