Hypomagnesemia is associated with alcoholism (Lim P, Jacob E. Metabolism 1972;21:1045-51). Here we assess two measurements of blood magnesium in emergency care patients with confirmed ethanol ingestion. Serum total and ionized magnesium (tMg, iMg) were measured in 88 patients with ethanol concentrations of 6-128 mmol/L and in sera of 97 hospitalized patients (control group). iMg was measured by an ion-selective electrode method; tMg was measured spectrophotometrically. iMg was significantly lower for the ethanol-containing specimens (0.35 +/- 0.12 mmol/L, mean +/- SD) than for the control group (0.46 +/- 0.15 mmol/L), with P <0.0001. The tMg for the test group (0.87 +/- 0.20 mmol/L) was not significantly different from the controls (0.88 +/- 0.33 mmol/L), with P = 0.5987. tMg was not well-correlated with iMg in the ethanol-positive specimens. Most ethanol-positive patients had abnormally low serum iMg (87 of 88 had iMg <0.53 mmol/L).

Background: Existing biomarkers including cerebrospinal fluid and positron emission tomography for Alzheimer's disease (AD) diagnosis are relatively invasive and expensive. Application of exhaled breath collection and volatile organic compound (VOC) detection for AD diagnosis remains unclear.
Method: In this cross-sectional study, high-pressure photon ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (HPPI-ToF-MS) was used to detect VOCs from breath in three datasets and patients diagnosed as Parkinson's disease (PD).
Background: The rapidly growing pipeline of target-specific Alzheimer's Disease (AD) therapeutic candidates requires accompanying tests that can identify patients likely to have a beneficial response. The growing importance of multiple pathologies in determining AD progression and treatment response underscores this need. Our work focuses on establishing analytical capability to expand detectable forms of major protein drug targets for AD: Tau, amyloid beta (Ab) and a-Synuclein (aS) proteoforms as potential personalized molecular signatures.

Background: Increasing evidence shows that many lipids play important roles in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD), including Aβ plaque formation. Of note, the greatest genetic risk of late onset AD, apolipoprotien E4 (APOE4), plays a major role in lipid transport. However, the profile of lipids that play a role in AD is poorly understood.

Background: The serum calcification propensity test (or T50 test) might become a standard tool for the assessment of vascular calcification risk and T50 might be a valuable biomarker in clinical trials of treatments intended to slow the progression of vascular calcification. Literature data suggest that non-calcium-containing phosphate binders can influence T50 in chronic dialysed patients. However, it is not clear whether similar interventions are effective in patients at earlier stages of chronic kidney disease (CKD).

Higher alkanes are a major class of intermediate volatile organic compounds (IVOCs) emitted by vehicles, which have been considered as important precursors of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) in urban area. Dynamometer experiments were conducted to characterize emissions from gasoline and diesel vehicles in China. Three types of higher alkanes, namely acyclic, cyclic, and bicyclic alkanes, were explicitly quantified through the novel proton transfer reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometer with NO ionization (NO PTR-ToF-MS) with time response of 1 second.
