Presents electron microscopic data on the metal surfaces polished with paste TOI and diamond+ultradispersion (DUD) paste. Polishing with TOI paste leaves craters on metal surface, whereas after polishing with DUD paste the surface is smooth. A hypothesis on the mechanism of these phenomena is proposed.
