We have investigated physiological changes in 21 patients with a spinal cord injury who were fitted with the RGO-II hybrid orthosis. All parameters were measured before and after a training programme in order to evaluate the benefit of gait rehabilitation, cardiovascular adaptation, constipation, spasticity and osteoporosis. A tendency for the improvement in cardiovascular function was noticed, and a segmental decrease in right colonic transit time was observed. However there was no reproducible change in spasticity, and no gain in bone mineral density. These data suggest that the physiological benefits which occur when patients walk with the aid of a hybrid orthosis only correct the effects of immobility. In addition, we did not find any physiological improvement regarding the neurological lesion (spasticity or osteoporosis).

Drop foot is a common consequence of Multiple Sclerosis (MS), which may be improved somewhat by an ankle-foot orthosis (AFO). This study aimed to examine the immediate effect of using the recently developed Novel Hybrid Passive Spring Damper AFO (the novel HPSDAFO) on the kinetic and kinematic parameters of patients with MS (PwMS) in the sagittal plane. Twelve PwMS who suffered a unilateral drop foot participated in this study and fitted with the novel HPSDAFO.

This study proposes a novel gait rehabilitation method that uses a hybrid system comprising a powered ankle-foot orthosis (PAFO) and FES, and presents its coordination control. The developed system provides assistance to the ankle joint in accordance with the degree of volitional participation of patients with post-stroke hemiplegia. The PAFO adopts the desired joint angle and impedance profile obtained from biomechanical simulation.

Passive and hybrid passive Ankle foot orthoses (AFOs) are the prevalent prescription in drop foot patients to prevent toe dragging during the swing phase. While, these AFOs have some limitations like inability to overcome foot slap, limitation in forward propulsion and inappropriate power generate at the push off. The aim of this study was to design a novel spring damper and evaluate the immediate effects of this AFO on improving the ankle kinetic and kinematic in drop foot patients.

Background: Active upper extremity (UE) assistive devices have the potential to restore independent functional movement in individuals with UE impairment due to neuromuscular diseases or injury-induced chronic weakness. Academically fabricated UE assistive devices are not usually optimized for activities of daily living (ADLs), whereas commercially available alternatives tend to lack flexibility in control and activation methods. Both options are typically difficult to don and doff and may be uncomfortable for extensive daily use due to their lack of personalization.

Introduction: Interest in anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) repair has been increasing as an alternative to traditional reconstructive techniques and encouraging results have been demonstrated using internal bracing with suture tape augmentation (FiberTape®, Arthrex, Naples, Florida). ACL repair is challenging if the rupture is mid-substance or distal. We describe the case of a hybrid ACL reconstruction with internal brace augmentation.
