Our evaluation of electronic liquid-borne particle counter systems has shown that, for accurate measurement of particulate matter in injections, the half count values of voltage thresholds from the particle counter itself should be used in the calibration for the particle sizes being evaluated. The manual method which uses the half count values in the USP XXIII<788> was improved, and the validity of our calibration method was supported by the results based on the ratio test, at 10 microns to those obtained at 15 microns is between 1.5 and 3.5, as per the Seventh Supplement of USP XXII <788>. Additionally, computer-based systems with automated calibration routines which solve the approximate Gaussian distribution of calibration particles have advantages. For the proper determination of the sizing accuracy of a particle counter, criteria of the ratio test at 10 microns and 15 microns as per the Seventh Supplement of USP XXII <788> should be applied at all critical particle sizes.

Competing Hexagonal and Square Lattices on a Spherical Surface.

Nano Lett

January 2025

School of Physics and Key Laboratory of Functional Polymer Materials of Ministry of Education, Nankai University, and Collaborative Innovation Center of Chemical Science and Engineering, Tianjin 300071, China.

The structural properties of packed soft-core particles provide a platform to understand the cross-pollinated physical concepts in solid-state and soft-matter physics. Confined on a spherical surface, the traditional differential geometry also dictates the overall defect properties in otherwise regular crystal lattices. Using molecular dynamics simulation of the Hertzian model as a tool, we report here the emergence of new types of disclination patterns: domain and counter-domain defects, when hexagonal and square patterns coexist.

In this Letter, we have proposed an all-optical scheme for chiral particle separation with a microcylinder-pair system (MCPS) with a micrometer scale channel, applicable in microfluidic environments. By illuminating the MCPS with two counter-incident plane waves of orthogonal polarization, the electromagnetic chirality gradient can be generated. The MCPS can also enhance chirality-dependent lateral optical forces of the coupled fields so that the setup can shift trapping equilibrium positions for opposite-handedness nanoparticles and make the sideways motion observable.

This study investigates whether 17β-estradiol (E2), a natural estrogen and one of the endocrine-disrupting chemicals responsible for water pollution, can be oxidatively decomposed under simulated solar light using a composite of tin oxide nanoparticles and graphene-like carbon nitride (g-CN) as a photocatalyst. The composite photocatalyst was prepared by heating a mixture of urea and tin acetate. FT-IR measurements revealed that g-CN possesses structural units similar to g-CN, a well-studied graphite-like carbon nitride.

Aims: This study aims to elucidate the therapeutic effects and underlying mechanisms of exosomes derived from Heme oxygenase 1 (HO-1)-overexpressing human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (Exo) in a subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) mouse model.

Methods: In this study, exosomes were identified using Western blotting, particle analysis, and transmission electron microscopy. The effect of Exo and Exo on the neurological function of SAH mice was assessed using the Garcia scoring system, Beam balance, Rotarod test, and Morris water maze test.

Practical, low-cost integrity testing of diesel particle filters using remote sensing measurement at the campus entrance gate.

Sci Total Environ

December 2024

ASEM (Czech Association of Emissions Technicians), Boleslavská 902, 293 06 Kosmonosy, Czech Republic.

This work investigates the detection of defunct or absent diesel particle filters by drive-through remote sensing measurement at the Czech University of Life Sciences main vehicular entrance gate. An exhaust sample was collected by a line attached to the road surface in the center of the travel lane. A non-volatile particle number (nvPN) counter and electric mobility particle size classifier were used to measure particle number concentrations, and an FTIR analyzer was used to measure CO, CO, and NO concentrations.
