To better understand the sources of biological diversity in nature, we need information on the mechanisms underlying population divergence. Biological systems with patterns of naturally occurring adaptive variation among populations can provide insight into the genetic architecture of diverging traits and the influence of genetic constraints on responses to selection. Using a system of reproductive character displacement in the North American mushroom-feeding fly Drosophila subquinaria, we assessed patterns of genetic (co)variance among a suite of chemical signaling traits and divergence in this pattern among populations.

Ecological concrete by partially substitution of cement with Cameroonian corn stover ash.

Heliyon

January 2025

Mechanics Laboratory, Doctoral Training Unit in Engineering Sciences, Doctoral School of Fundamental and Applied Sciences, University of Douala, P.O. Box: 2701, Douala, Cameroon.

This study focuses on the influence of the partial substitution of cement by Cameroonian corn stover ash (CCSA) on the physical and mechanical behavior of concrete. For this, as materials used, one has first the corn stovers coming from the Bandjoun town in the Koung-khi division, in the West region of Cameroon, which are used to obtain the ashes, while the sand used, came from the Sanaga River in the coastal region of Cameroon. In order to obtain the CCSA, the corn stover is calcined in an oven at 600 °C for 6 h and then characterized; the characterization included infrared spectrometry, X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, fineness of grinding, and absolute density.

Background & Problems: Oral administration is the most common mode of medical treatment for pediatric patients. Although over 98% of the patients in the targeted pediatric unit require oral medication, the oral administration adherence rate in 2022 was 43.9%.

Background: Cerebral creatine deficiency disorders (CCDD) are rare diseases caused by defects in the enzymes L-arginine: glycine amidinotransferase (AGAT) or guanidinoacetate-N-methyltransferase (GAMT), which are involved in synthesis of creatine; or by a defect in the creatine transporter (CRTR), which is essential for uptake of creatine as important energy source into the target cells. Patients with CCDD can present with a variety of unspecific symptoms: global developmental delay, speech-language disorder, behavioral abnormalities and seizures. Early treatment initiation is essential in AGAT and GAMT deficiencies to achieve a favorable outcome.

Muscular anatomy of the forelimb of Leopardus geoffroyi: Functional and phylogenetic aspects in Feliformia, part I. Proximal forelimb.

J Anat

January 2025

Instituto de Ecorregiones Andinas (INECOA), Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas (CONICET), Universidad Nacional de Jujuy, Jujuy, Argentina.

Anatomical knowledge is fundamental for all species. In particular, myology allows a deeper understanding of ecomorphology-especially for those species hard to observe in the wild-and may be an important source for phylogenetic information. In this study, we analyzed the myological variation of the musculature of the shoulder and arm of the forelimb in species of the suborder Feliformia and its relationship with the phylogenetic history and the locomotor behavior, habitat, and predatory habits of the species within this group, using Leopardus geoffroyi as a case study.
