Xanthine Oxidase-Induced Inflammatory Responses in Respiratory Epithelial Cells: A Review in Immunopathology of COVID-19.

Xanthine oxidase (XO) is an enzyme that catalyzes the production of uric acid and superoxide radicals from purine bases: hypoxanthine and xanthine and is also expressed in respiratory epithelial cells. Uric acid, which is also considered a danger associated molecule pattern (DAMP), could trigger a series of inflammatory responses by activating the inflammasome complex path and NF-B within the endothelial cells and by inducing proinflammatory cytokine release. Concurrently, XO also converts the superoxide radicals into hydroxyl radicals that further induce inflammatory responses.

Bovine milk exosomes attenuate the alteration of purine metabolism and energy status in IEC-6 cells induced by hydrogen peroxide.

Food Chem

July 2021

Research Center for Translational Medicine at Shanghai East Hospital, Tongji University School of Medicine, Tongji University, Shanghai, PR China; Shanghai Institute of Stem Cell Research and Clinical Translation, Shanghai, PR China. Electronic address:

Evidence suggests that dietary depletion of bovine milk exosomes and their cargos causes a loss of circulating microRNAs and a series of health problems. The aim of the current study was to determine whether bovine milk exosomes affect purine nucleotide metabolism and energy metabolism in oxidatively stressed intestinal crypt epithelial cells (IEC-6). Cells were pretreated with exosomes, followed by HO to induce oxidative stress.

Producers of soy sauce are constantly making efforts to improve the sensory quality and nutritional value of their products. In this study, radishes, apples, and pears were used to prepare a distinctly flavored soy sauce, and the lactic acid bacteria, volatile compound content, and nutritional and functional qualities of the product were compared with two commercial flavored soy sauce products. Comparable physiochemical properties, antioxidant activities (in vitro and cellular), and higher prevalence of lactic acid bacteria (7.

Among a series of xanthones identified from mangosteen, the fruit of L. (Guttifereae), - and -mangostins are known to be major constituents exhibiting diverse biological activities. However, the effects of -mangostin on oxidative neurotoxicity and impaired memory are yet to be elucidated.

Chronic overconsumption of animal fats causes a variety of health problems, including diabetes mellitus and obesity. Underlying molecular mechanisms encompass leptin resistance, a decrease in rewarding effects of physical activities, xanthine oxidase-induced oxidative stress in vasculature and peripheral tissue, impaired activation of incretin signaling, deviation in food preference, and dysbiosis of gut microbiota. Based on our clinical observation that daily intake of brown rice effectively ameliorates bodyweight gain, impaired glucose tolerance/insulin resistance and dependence on fatty foods in obese, prediabetes men, a line of research on brown rice (rice bran)-derived γ-oryzanol in mice experiments, cultured cells and human clinical trials is underway in our laboratory.
