CD66a, also called biliary glycoprotein (BGP), is a member of the carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) family and of the immunoglobulin superfamily. CD66a is the human homologue of Cell-CAM, a well-defined cell adhesion molecule of the rat. In the present study a monoclonal antibody specific for CD66a was used to locate CD66a in human tissues. CD66a is expressed in epithelia, in certain endothelia, and in cells of the myeloid lineage. Hepatocytes were stained along the bile canaliculi. A characteristic apical membranous staining was observed in enterocytes, superficial absorptive cells of the colon, in the epithelia of esophageal and Brunner's glands, bile ducts and gallbladder, pancreatic ducts, proximal tubules of the kidney, prostate, endometrium, and mammary ducts. Selective staining of endothelia was present in glomeruli and vasa recta of the kidney, small placental vessels, adrenal sinusoids, endometrium, the prostate. Among the cells of the myeloid lineage, granulocytes and myelocytes were positive. The expression of CD66a by human cells and tissues is well comparable with the expression reported for Cell-CAM, the rat counterpart of CD66a. The wide tissue distribution of CD66a indicates that CD66a is a prominent human adhesion molecule.

Purpose Of Review: The exposome refers to the total environmental exposures a person encounters throughout life, and its relationship with human health is increasingly studied. This non-systematic review focuses on recent research investigating the effects of environmental factors-such as air pollution, noise, greenspace, neighborhood walkability, and metallic pollutants-on atherosclerosis, a major cause of cardiovascular disease.

Recent Findings: Studies show that long-term exposure to airborne particulate matter can impair endothelial function and elevate adhesion molecule levels, leading to vascular damage.

Objective: This study investigated methods of evaluating the bone fracture healing process using superb microvascular imaging (SMI; two modes color SMI [cSMI] and monochromeSMI [mSMI]), and shear wave elastography (SWE), relative to X-ray, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), and platelet endothelial cell adhesion molecule 1 (PECAM-1) also know as cluster of differentiation 31 (CD-31) staining in a rabbit model.

Methods: This IACUC-approved study involved eight rabbits that underwent a bilateral fibula osteotomy and were followed for 7 or 21 days (Groups 1 and 2 with 4 rabbits in each). Ultrasound examinations using cSMI, mSMI, and SWE were performed on Days 0, 4, 7, 14, and 21 post-surgery.

Ligands of CD6: roles in the pathogenesis and treatment of cancer.

Front Immunol

January 2025

Division of Rheumatology, Department of Internal Medicine, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI, United States.

Cluster of Differentiation 6 (CD6), an established marker of T cells, has multiple and complex functions in regulation of T cell activation and proliferation, and in adhesion of T cells to antigen-presenting cells and epithelial cells in various organs and tissues. Early studies on CD6 demonstrated its role in mediating cell-cell interactions through its first ligand to be identified, CD166/ALCAM. The observation of CD6-dependent functions of T cells that could not be explained by interactions with CD166/ALCAM led to discovery of a second ligand, CD318/CDCP1.

Meeting report - Alpine desmosome disease meeting 2024: advances and emerging topics in desmosomes and related diseases.

Desmosomes are adhesive cell contacts abundant in tissues exposed to mechanical strain, such as the stratified and simple epithelia of the epidermis and mucous membranes, as well as the myocardium. Besides their role in mechanical cell cohesion, desmosomes also modulate pathways important for tissue differentiation, wound healing and immune responses. Dysfunctional desmosomes, resulting from pathogenic variants in genes encoding desmosomal components, autoantibodies targeting desmosomal adhesion molecules or inflammation, cause the life-threatening diseases arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy and pemphigus and contribute to the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel diseases.

Background: Lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) is the most common histological subtype of lung cancer. JAM2, a member of the Junctional adhesion molecule (JAM) family, plays diverse roles in cell-cell contacts and tumor development. Although JAM2's expression and functions have been reported in various cancers, its clinical and biological significance in LUAD remains unclear.
