We investigated the proliferation of scleral cells in response to several growth factors in vitro to elucidate the mechanism of scleral growth in visual deprivation myopia. Scleral chondrocytes and scleral fibroblasts were cultured separately in 24-well culture dishes. The number of plated cells was counted after the addition of basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), transforming growth factor alpha (TGF-alpha), TGF-beta, insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I), IGF-II, platelet-derived growth factor AA (PDGF-AA), PDGF-AB and PDGF-BB. All the growth factors studied, except for PDGF-AA, stimulated the proliferation of both scleral chondrocytes and scleral fibroblasts. bFGF showed the highest effect. TGF-beta caused morphologic changes in both scleral chondrocytes and scleral fibroblasts. Various growth factors stimulated the proliferation of scleral chondrocytes and scleral fibroblasts in a similar manner. bFGF was a potent growth stimulator and TGF-beta was suggested to be a growth regulator on scleral chondrocytes and scleral fibroblasts.

Spontaneous cartilaginous metaplasia of the sclera has not been reported in rabbits. Herein, we report two cases of spontaneous cartilaginous metaplasia in the sclera of Japanese White (JW) rabbits. Case 1 was noted in a 14-week-old male Kbs:JW rabbit that received a single ocular instillation of 20% isoproterenol (IP) a day before necropsy, and showed no abnormalities in clinical signs, ophthalmological assessments, and necropsy.

The ocular skeleton is composed of the scleral cartilage and the scleral ossicles. Teleost scleral cartilage is composed of a single layer of chondrocytes embedded in the sclera of the eye. The teleost scleral cartilage ring can vary in depth across teleost families and species, from a narrow ring a few cells wide to a deeper ring that resembles a cup and surrounds the entire sclera.

Epithelial and stromal stem cells are required to maintain corneal transparency. The aim of the study was to develop a new method to isolate and grow both corneal stromal (SSC) and epithelial limbal (LSC) stem cells from small human limbal biopsies under culture conditions in accordance with safety requirements mandatory for clinical use in humans. Superficial limbal explants were retrieved from human donor corneo-scleral rims.

Background: Vertebrate head development depends on a series of interactions between many cell populations of distinct embryological origins. Cranial mesenchymal tissues have a dual embryonic source: - the neural crest (NC), which generates most of craniofacial skeleton, dermis, pericytes, fat cells, and tenocytes; and - the mesoderm, which yields muscles, blood vessel endothelia and some posterior cranial bones. The molecular players that orchestrate co-development of cephalic NC and mesodermal cells to properly construct the head of vertebrates remain poorly understood.
