Description of the value of cytology in the ambulant diagnosis of the thyroid gland bases on more than 4000 aspiration-punctions of thyroid gland (Wohlenberg and Pfannenstiel 1974). The indications and contraindications of the aspiration-punction are specified; the scintigraphic cold area is elaborated as a domin of the aspiration-punction. The applied technique and classification of the cytological diagnoses are 99 per cent identical with the histological diagnoses. Because of the large number of pathological modifications of the thyroid gland that have been identified as definitely benign a great many operations can be avoided. The knowledge of the history and the clinical results resp. of the course of the disease prevents delay of urgently indicated operations in cases of uncertain cytological diagnoses.

Case report: A case of lateral neck mass: ectopic thyroid carcinoma or lymph node metastasis?

Front Oncol

January 2025

Department of Thyroid Surgery, Jilin Provincial Key Laboratory of Surgical Translational Medicine, Jilin Provincial Precision Medicine Laboratory of Molecular Biology and Translational Medicine on Differentiated Thyroid Carcinoma, The China-Japan Union Hospital of Jilin University, Changchun, China.

Objective: To review a rare case of a lateral neck mass pathologically confirmed as an encapsulated papillary thyroid carcinoma in our center for complementing the lack of management of rare cases, and to explore the differentiation of primary ectopic thyroid carcinoma and metastatic disease in the context of the presence of malignant tumors within the situ thyroid gland.

Methods: We searched for studies on lateral neck ectopic thyroid cancer to compare and analyze it with metastatic carcinoma of the thyroid gland in terms of clinical features, imaging manifestations, pathological features at molecular level, and treatment principles.

Results: Based on available data, we concluded that the mass of this patient was consistent with metastatic lateral neck ectopic thyroid carcinoma.

Spontaneous bilateral thyroid follicular cell carcinoma (subtype: compact cellular carcinoma) with C-cell complexes in a male beagle.

J Toxicol Pathol

January 2025

Safety Research Laboratory, Kissei Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., 2320-1 Maki, Hotaka, Azumino, Nagano 399-8305, Japan.

We report the features of spontaneous bilateral thyroid follicular cell carcinoma in a 10-year-old male beagle. Necropsy revealed bilateral masses on the trachea, corresponding to the left and right sides of the thyroid gland. The masses were elastic, encapsulated, and distinct, with no connecting tumor tissues between them.

Rationale: Follicular tumors with uncertain malignant potential of the thyroid are a new classification of thyroid tumors in the World Health Organization (2017). Only a few cases of evaluating the value of ultrasound combined with pathological examination in diagnosing follicular tumors with uncertain malignant potential of the thyroid have been reported in recent decades.

Patient Concerns: A retrospective analysis was performed on 18 patients with follicular tumors with uncertain thyroid malignant potential who underwent preoperative ultrasonography and were confirmed by operation and pathology in our hospital from January 2019 to November 2024.

Autoimmune polyglandular syndromes (APS) are characterized by associations of two or more autoimmune diseases (AID). APS type 3 is characterized by the presence of autoimmune thyroid disease associated with other AID, excluding adrenal gland involvement. Here we report a case of a 64-year-old male, with history of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM), diagnosed at the age of 32, who was referred to a Diabetes consultation in 2014 due to poor metabolic control.

The molecular mechanisms underlying adrenal and thyroid neuroendocrine tumors, including their tumorigenesis, progression, and metastasis, involve unique pathways regulating cell cycle progression. To better understand these mechanisms and pathways, extensive in-depth research on cell cycle-related genes is necessary. This review aims to describe and interpret current single-cell RNA sequencing studies on neuroblastoma, medullary thyroid cancer, and pheochromocytoma tumors.
