A markedly elevated prothrombin time (PT) and activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) were observed in a 24-year-old man who was admitted with a history of ethylene glycol ingestion. Further laboratory evaluation suggested that the coagulopathy was related to acquired factor deficiencies. The PT and APTT improved transiently on usual doses of vitamin K, but rapidly became abnormal again. The coagulopathy was controlled only after large doses of vitamin K for at least 37 days. On further questioning, the patient admitted to consuming a large quantity of a rodenticide. The second generation anticoagulant rodenticides (superwarfarins) result in a potent and prolonged anticoagulant effect by reducing the activity of the vitamin K dependent factors (II, XII, IX, and X). To our knowledge, this is the first reported concomitant ingestion of both ethylene glycol and a superwarfarin compound. This case serves to illustrate how a logical laboratory evaluation can lead to the proper diagnosis, despite a misleading clinical history.

This study evaluates the feasibility of converting Ca-montmorillonite into Na-montmorillonite through electroosmosis. Comprehensive analyses of current, pH, ζ-potential, and ethylene glycol expansion were conducted to investigate the macro- and microscale effects of electroosmosis. The results demonstrate that electroosmosis effectively reduces the swelling properties of montmorillonite.

Herein, an eco-friendly and degradable poly(lactic acid) aerogel was prepared by combining a poly(ethylene glycol) template material with thermally induced phase separation. Due to the tailored pore size introduced by the template material, the aerogel exhibits high solar reflectance (92.0%), excellent thermal emittance (90.

The combination of chemotherapy and gene therapy holds promise in treating cancer. A key strategy is to use small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) to silence programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression in cancer cells, disrupting tumor immune evasion and enhancing anticancer treatments, particularly when used in conjunction with chemotherapy drugs such as doxorubicin (Dox). However, effective codelivery of drugs and genes requires carefully designed carriers and complex synthesis procedures.

Combining polysaccharides with polypeptides enables growth of diverse nanostructures with minimal toxicity, low immune response, and potential biodegradability. However, examples of nanostructures combining polysaccharides with polypeptides are limited due to synthetic difficulties and related issues of solubility, purification, and characterization, with previous reports of polysaccharide-block-polypeptide block copolymers requiring methods such as polymer-polymer coupling and post-polymerization modifications paired with difficult purification steps. Here, we synthesized dextran-block-poly(benzyl glutamate) block copolymers in water via polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) to form nanostructures in situ, studying their morphologies using experimental methods and molecular modeling.

Architecturally hindered crystallization of bottlebrush graft copolymers offers a reaction- and solvent-free pathway for creating injectable elastomers with tissue-mimetic softness. Currently, injectable materials involve solvents and chemical reactions, leading to uncontrolled swelling, leaching of unreacted moieties, and side reactions with tissue. To address this issue, bottlebrush copolymers with a poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) amorphous block and crystallizable poly(lactic acid) (PLA) grafted chains (A--B) were synthesized, with grafted chains of controlled length arranged along the backbone at controlled spacing.
