The results suggest the feasibility of metabolic and behavioral interrelationships between ethanol (ET), certain neurotransmitter substances and major metabolites, some neuropeptides and/or psychoactive agents. This was indicated by the in vivo and in vitro effects of such authentic compounds on certain ET-elicited behavioral responses and on hepatic ET and acetaldehyde metabolizing enzymes in rats and mice.

Objectives: Arginine vasopressin (AVP), known as an antidiuretic hormone, is also crucial in metabolic homeostasis. Although AVP receptor-deficient mice exhibit various abnormalities in glucose and lipid metabolism, the mechanism underlying these symptoms remains unclear. This study aimed to explore the involvement of the gut hormones including glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and microbiota as essential mediators.

Sleep fragmentation (SF) is increasingly recognized as a contributing factor to postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD). Given the critical roles of somatostatin (SST) interneurons, associated gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)ergic neurotransmitters, and hippocampal perfusion in sleep-related cognition, this study examined changes in these mechanisms in preoperative SF affecting POCD induced by anesthesia/surgery in aged male mice. The Morris water maze (MWM), novel object recognition (NOR), and Y maze tests were utilized to evaluate POCD.

Hypertension-induced myocardial remodelling encompasses both structural and functional changes in cardiac muscle tissue, such as myocardial hypertrophy, fibrosis, and inflammation. These alterations not only impair the systolic and diastolic functions of the heart but also elevate the risk of cardiovascular events and heart failure. One of the primary contributors to hypertensive cardiomyopathy (HTN-CM) is the over-activation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS), which subsequently induces myocardial remodeling.
