In Escherichia coli strains isolated from faeces and smears from the rectum in haemolytic-uraemic syndrome of a child and healthy relatives the authors assessed the biochemical activity, antigenic characteristic, sensitivity to twelve antimicrobial substances and factors of virulence. Sorbitol negative strains were isolated from the ill child and his father. The strains belonged into serogroup 016. The remaining strains were sorbitol positive. They belonged into serogroups 02, 012 and 019. Nineteen sorbitol negative strains of E. coli from the sick child caused mannose sensitive agglutination of chicken and guinea pig erythrocytes, they produced colicin V and aerobactin. Except for one strain they were serum resistant. Fourteen strains induced the oedema on the foot of mice and eleven produced a lethal effect in mice. Except for three ampicillin resistant strains the remaining were sensitive to the examined antibacterial substances. Two sorbitol negative strains of E. coli isolated from the asymptomatic father produced aerobactin and one strain was serum resistant.

The aim of this study was to explore the effect of periodical negative air ions (NAI) on the quality of 'Fuji' apple fruit after treatment at 0, 30, 60, and 90 min every 4 weeks. NAI for 60 min decreased weight loss, mitigated decay, and maintained hardness of the apple fruit during the 40 weeks of storage. Treatment of fruits with NAI for 60 min enhanced the apple defense ability against pathogens by maintaining the cell wall integrity and improving the related-enzyme activities as well as accumulation of total phenols and flavonoids.

Objective: The association of sorbitol intake with maintaining healthy body weight through the gut microbiome during early life was investigated.
Research Methods And Procedures: Sorbitol intake, body mass index (BMI), and fecal samples were collected in the total of 369 pregnant women with their infants (aged 4 months to 5 years) from the Taipei Mother-Infant Nutrition Cohort and 1946 children and adolescents (aged 6-18 years) from the Taiwan Puberty Longitudinal Study. The BMI-z score in sorbitol users was compared to that in sorbitol nonusers using generalized linear mixed model.

The pearl millet gene PgPM19 inhibits seed dormancy by negatively regulating the ABA biosynthesis and ABA signaling pathways in response to salinity stress in Arabidopsis. Abscisic acid (ABA) plays a pivotal role in orchestrating plant stress responses and development. However, how the ABA signal is transmitted in response to stresses remains primarily uncertain, particularly in monocotyledonous plants.

Osmotic stress is one of the main destructive abiotic factors that hinder plant growth and development. In this research, the role of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) in mitigating the negative impact of osmotic stress on in vitro grown Chenopodium quinoa (Quinoa 6 Line; Q6) was investigated to determine whether Ag NPs were able to reduce the negative effects on the in vitro grown cultures of the Q6 line. The explants were subcultured onto a special osmostressing media containing sucrose, sorbitol, or mannitol at different levels (0.
