Breast implants in current use utilize silicone gel for filler material. One substantial drawback of silicone gel is its radiodensity, resulting in the obscuration of breast tissue on mammography. The relative radiolucencies of silicone gel, saline, breast tissue equivalent, triglycerides (peanut oil), and polyvinylpyrrolidone (Bio-Oncotic gel) were determined by using standard mammographic equipment. Visibility through these materials was compared by using a standard breast phantom as background. The x-ray dosage necessary to create each mammographic image was measured. Peanut oil provided the clearest image of the phantom artifacts, required the least radiation exposure, and was approximately four times more radiolucent than the saline or Bio-Oncotic gel and about 45 times more radiolucent than silicone gel. As improved implant filler materials are being sought, triglycerides maintain superior radiographic properties.

Animal muscles have complex, three-dimensional structures with fibers oriented in various directions. The tongue, in particular, features a highly intricate muscular system composed of four intrinsic muscles and several types of extrinsic muscles, enabling flexible and diverse movements essential for feeding, swallowing, and speech production. Replicating these structures could lead to the development of multifunctional manipulators and advanced platforms for studying muscle-motion relationships.

A series of Si-H- or Si-Vi-terminated, branched and linear oligomers containing MeSiO segments were prepared by equilibrium polymerization or non-equilibrium polymerization initiated by living anions, respectively. These oligomers were used to improve the defects of concentrated crosslinking points and the high hardness of crosslinked products when using phenyltris(dimethylsiloxy)silane or 1,1,5,5-tetramethyl-3,3-diphenyl trisiloxane as crosslinking agents in the preparation of silicone gel. NMR, FT-IR, and GPC characterized the structure and molecular weight information of the prepared oligomers.

Waterborne polyurethane, with a mechanical strength comparable to solvent-based types, is eco-friendly and safe, using water as a dispersion medium. Polyacrylate excels in film formation and weather resistance but suffers from "hot stickiness and cold brittleness". Merging polyurethane and polyacrylate creates advanced hybrids, while organosilicon enhances properties but is restricted due to hydrolytic crosslinking.

Systemic siliconomas following breast implant rupture.

BMJ Case Rep

January 2025

General Surgery, Universidade de Lisboa Faculdade de Medicina, Lisboa, Portugal.

We report a case of a woman in her late 40s with a history of breast implant surgery following breast cancer treatment. She presented with asymmetrical breast enlargement, palpable contralateral axillary lymph nodes and cutaneous nodules on both forearms. In addition, imaging evaluation revealed intracapsular implant rupture, ipsilateral internal mammary enlarged lymph nodes and multiple mediastinal lymphadenopathies.
