Disruption of gamete fusion alters the sperm-egg ratio at gamete interaction.

Department of Biological Science, University of Tulsa, Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA.

Background: The mechanisms enabling sperm to locate unfertilized eggs within the fallopian tubes remain a subject of debate in reproductive biology. Previous studies using polytocous mammals observed a 1:1 sperm-egg ratio within the ampulla at the time of fertilization. From these observations, it is hypothesized that this mechanism could be linked to sperm-egg fusion, such that unfertilized eggs may attract sperm until fusion occurs, whereupon the attraction ceases.

: Persistent Müllerian duct syndrome (PMDS) is a rare disorder of sex development (DSD) caused by mutations in the genes coding anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) or the AMH receptor, characterized by the persistence of Müllerian derivatives, the uterus and/or fallopian tubes, in otherwise normally virilized boys. Testicular regression syndrome is common in PMDS, yet the association with supernumerary testis has been reported in only two patients where genetic testing was not performed. : Thus, we report an individual with this particular association caused by a previously unreported homozygous variant in the gene to enable future genotype-phenotype correlations in this rare disorder.

Antimony exposure affects oocyte quality and early embryo development via excessive mitochondrial oxidation and dysfunction.

Article Synopsis
  • Antimony (Sb) exposure has a negative impact on female reproduction, leading to reduced quality of oocytes and failure in fertilization.
  • The study involved exposing ICR mice to varying doses of Sb and observing significant damage to oocyte maturation, particularly affecting the cytoskeleton and mitochondrial function.
  • The findings indicate that Sb leads to oxidative stress and early apoptosis in oocytes, ultimately compromising female fertility by impairing energy supply and mitochondrial health.

Extraovarian sex cord-stromal tumor is an exceedingly uncommon entity that may cause a diagnostic dilemma clinically. We report a case of extraovarian fibroma with minor sex cord elements arising in the left broad ligament. The patient was a 66-year-old woman presenting with an intra-abdominal solid mass near the left ovary on magnetic resonance imaging.

Ectopic ovary, a designation that includes supernumerary ovaries and accessory ovaries, is a rare gonadal anomaly. We encountered a patient with a metastasis to such an anomaly and herein provide a review of the published work. A 43-year-old woman was diagnosed with stage IIb cervical adenocarcinoma with suspicion for a right ovarian malignancy.
