Article Abstract

Autoimmune disorders are mainly clinically defined disease entities. The diagnosis of many of the systemic autoimmunopathies is based on characteristic combinations of symptoms, some of them overlapping various kinds and being of unspecific nature. Therefore, laboratory parameters such as autoantibodies, components of the complement system, some cytokines and their receptors, etc., are used for the diagnosis, although many of them are of limited specificity and sensitivity. The most important immunoparameters being of value for diagnosis and disease monitoring are discussed, and a stepwise procedure is proposed in order to reduce the costs. Basis are the screening tests for antinuclear antibodies (ANA) and for antibodies against cytoplasmatic components of granulocytes (ANCA). Depending on more specific questions, other tests and test combinations are then applied in second and third priorities.

Background: The reported benefit of poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase inhibitor (PARPi) maintenance in patients with newly diagnosed and platinum (Pt)-sensitive recurrent ovarian cancer (OC) included in randomized clinical trials needs to be corroborated in a less selected population.

Objective: The aim is to increase the evidence on niraparib in a real-world setting.

Methods: This is a retrospective observational study including women with platinum-sensitive relapsed high-grade serous OC who started niraparib maintenance between August 2019 (marketing data, Spain) and May 2022.

Integrated health and nutrition packages in schools have been shown to be a cost-effective approach to support children's well-being and academic achievement; yet few countries adequately invest in promoting such integration. School feeding programmes in Latin America are among the best-established, with some of the largest scale and coverage in the world. National School Meal programmes in Latin America and the Caribbean benefit over 80.

Oxidative stress (OS) is established as a key factor in the etiology of both male and female infertility, arising from an imbalance between reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and the endogenous antioxidant (AOX) defenses. In men, OS adversely affects sperm function by inducing DNA damage, reducing motility, significantly impairing sperm vitality through plasma membrane peroxidation and loss of membrane integrity, and ultimately compromising overall sperm quality. In women, OS is implicated in various reproductive disorders, including polycystic ovary syndrome, endometriosis, and premature ovarian failure, leading to diminished oocyte quality, disrupted folliculogenesis, and poorer reproductive outcomes.

Dose-dependent impact of intact cell fraction on in vitro starch digestion of common bean-based flour blends.

Food Chem

Laboratory of Food Technology, Department of Microbial and Molecular Systems (M2S), KU Leuven, Kasteelpark Arenberg 22, PB 2457, 3001 Leuven, Belgium. Electronic address:

Pulse flours consisting of isolated cotyledon cells (ICC) have been incorporated in foods with delayed amylolysis. To optimize the cost-benefit ratio, understanding how the dosage of cellular ingredient affects starch digestibility is essential. Therefore, dose-response relationships were established to evaluate the sensitivity of amylolysis kinetics to the inclusion of intact cells in whole common bean-based flours.

Despite ambitions in development and global health policy to transform communities into supportive environments for women facing risks of violence, our understanding of how to best engage communities remains incomplete. In particular, there is little evidence on the types of strategies that communities employ to address violence against women (VAW). We aimed to describe and analyse the processes involved in community responses to incidents of VAW in a non-governmental organisation (NGO) violence prevention programme in Mumbai, India.
